Hoodoo Blues album
$8.15 NATURALLY has stood up over the years as a perfect debut. When released in 1971, it introduced J.J. Cale's rootsy, laid back grooves to excellent effect, and in the decades since, this album and its follow-up, REALLY, have remained classics of mellow '70s country-rock. Riding on the success and easy blues feel of Eric Clapton's cover of Cale's "After Midnight," NATURALLY goes even deeper into roots music, concocting a mixture of country, blues, and boogie that is full of downhome goodness while it drips with cool.
Cale's version of "After Midnight" is here, as is his loping "Call Me the Breeze" (later covered by Lynyrd Skynyrd), and the minimal blues "Crazy Mama" (a radio hit for Cale). The music is deceptively tricky--the surface textures pull you in like a porch swing, but the interlocking rhythmic base is full of subtle tugs and pulls that are far from standard-issue slow boogie. A sterling cast of players backs Cale, adding warm tones and light, in-the-cut rhythms. NATURALLY is a perfect introduction to the work of this influential cult figure.
Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar, piano, drums); J.J. Cale; Dianne Davidson (vocals, background vocals); Chuck Browning (guitar, drums); Buddy Spicher (violin, fiddle); Buddy Spiker (fiddle); Ed Colis, Ed Colis (harmonica); Norman Ray (saxophone); Bob Wilson, Bob Wilson (piano); Tim Drummond (bass instrument, drums); Norbert Putnam, ...
| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Hoodoo Blues CD music
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Hoodoo Blues music CDs
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to the fatalism of the chain gang song "My Captain," Muddy's voice expresses entire worlds of emotion with only subtle dynamic changes. On FOLK SINGER's more downhearted cuts, there's a doomy, ominous quality that rivals the deepest emotional journeys of John Lee Hooker. By scaling down, Muddy managed to make his songs, guitar and voice seem exponentially magnified. Though it's one of his quietest albums, FOLK SINGER screams with naked emotion.

| | Ruthie Foster Phenomenal CD (2007)
Hoodoo Blues songs
$12.19 Ruthie Foster's fifth CD features the singer moving away from her usual genre of modern folk music into soul. While she performs selections by Son House and Sister Rosetta Tharpe and there are bluesy performances, most of the numbers are of more recent vintage. Her powerful voice, which infuses secular music with the power and emotions of gospel, is heard throughout in prime form and she makes a particularly powerful statement on "People Grinnin' in Your Face." Throughout this set, Ruthie Foster sounds a bit like a young Aretha Franklin (although not copying her) and gives one the impression that she could sing in any idiom that interested her. The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster is a strong example of her musical talents. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Jorma Kaukonen River Of Time CD (2009)
Hoodoo Blues album
$13.99 With the trademark meandering swing he brought to riffs in Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Jorma Kaukonen continues his mastery of acoustic roots music with RIVER OF TIME, his third solo outing of the '00s. Produced by Larry Campbell--famed for backing both Bob Dylan and Levon Helm--RIVER OF TIME offers a sepia-toned sampler of Kaukonen's many areas of expertise. From folk blues covers (such as Rev. Gary Davis's "There's A Bright Side Somewhere") to straighter country material (such as Merle Haggard's "More Than My Old Guitar") and from nods to his San Francisco roots (a cover of the Grateful ...
