Now and Now Again follows up on the success of 1998's Siren's Song, with Canada's Maritime Jazz Orchestra once again tackling the fabulous music of trumpeter/composer Kenny Wheeler. Joining Wheeler out in front of the 18-piece orchestra is his regular pianist John Taylor and the vocalist Norma Winstone. The disc begins with the huge, half-hour-long "Sweet Ruby Suite," which really cooks toward the end. It goes on to feature two shorter Wheeler compositions, "Now and Now Again" and "W.W." (the latter from 1984's Double, Double You), as well as John Taylor's "Pure and Simple," which appears a couple of times in drummer Peter Erskine's discography. Founder, arranger, and saxophonist Greg Carter directs the band with aplomb, summoning hard-driving swing. New York's John Hollenbeck is tremendously effective in the drum chair; Mike Murley, from the fusion band Metalwood, enlivens the saxophone section, stepping out with a number of fine solos. A vital addition to Wheeler's large-ensemble library, not to mention the canon of contemporary big band writing in general. ~ David R. Adler

Now And Now Again album
$15.25 The sole album released by this group from Montreal, Et Cetera ranks among the finest items in Quebec progressive rock and remains a sought-after collector's item. The group benefited from a sleek production that enhances its rich arrangements and complex contrapuntal lines. This is as close as any derivative prog rock band got to Gentle Giant. Besides emulating the technique of their illustrious British masters, the Montrealers tapped into the essence ...
| | Don Ellis Shock Treatment CD (1968)
Now And Now Again CD music
$11.69 Recorded on Febrary 14 & 15, 1968. Includes liner notes by Digby Diehl and Nick Di Scala.
Don Ellis was such a talented trumpeter, composer, and organizer that everything he recorded as a leader has at least some unusual moments worth exploring. His big bands were characterized by big brassy arrangements, odd meters that somehow always swung, lots of trumpet solos by Ellis, and an often visceral excitement. Although not equal to his best records such as Electric Bath, this late recording of Ellis' band is filled with all these traits, and thus exudes lots of excitement and electricity. At this stage in his career, the trumpeter seemed to be searching for a breakthrough, perhaps on a popular level. This manifests itself with occasional Age of Aquarius vocals and spacy harmonies that appeal to a broad audience. Even the more commercial tracks delight ...

| | Ruby Braff America, The Beautiful CD (1982)
Now And Now Again album
$9.69 Recorded live at Keystone Oaks High School, Dormont, Pennsylvania on April 24, 1982. Includes liner notes by Dick Hyman.
A resurgence in patriotic themes in music has paralleled a resurgence of patriotism in the United States following the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. America, the Beautiful, a duet concert between cornetist Ruby Braff and organist Dick Hyman, was originally released in 1984 and later issued on CD under the unpromising title A Pipe Organ Recital Plus One by Concord. When the album failed to sell, Concord dropped it and the album remained in limbo until 2002 when it was made available to Arbors, who reverted to ...
