THREESOME NO. 1 is a boxset containing the first three Mothers Of Invention records; FREAK OUT! (1966), ABSOLUTELY FREE (1967) and WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY (1967).
This three-disc set and its companion volume THREESOME NO. 2 distill Frank Zappa's enormous catalog to some of its most essential titles. Nicely packaged in a slipcase, the three albums which appear in their entirety are FREAK OUT!, ABSOLUTELY FREE, and WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY. Released during 1966-1968, this trio effectively toppled the applecart of current conventions, sending pointed barbs out in the then-expected direction of "the establishment," but, more importantly, also exposing the hypocrisies and smoke-and-mirrors of the counterculture/hippie realm.
Heard throughout these albums are strains of doo-wop, L.A. soul, post-bop jazz grooves, 20th Century classical experimentation, and rock & roll ditties. Zappa was a synthesizer of varied musical forms (making it little surprise that he devoted much of his later time to using actual synthesizers for all or part of his compositional and performance processes).

| Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Frank Zappa Reveiw What can you say about Frank Zappa that hasn't already been said. The man is a genius, and these early works will just whet your appetite for more. Submitted by chrslcs (Round Lake Park, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wish I was There... I have listened to Zappa since 1977, as a freshman in High School. His music was the sound of growing up. It was odd, scary, hysterical, and sophisticated. I instictually but casually explored his catalog for the next 30 years, coming to his earliest works rather late. They are deceptively silly and clunky compared to his later masterworks, but repeated listenings have revealed them to be sublimely satisfying. As a cerebral excercise, they challenge every notion of style, taste, and fashion, but musically they are so impeccable. Just try and peck 'em... | | Denison Witmer Of Joy & Sorrow CD (2002)
