Heavy influenced by Wagner & Germanic mythology, no wonder this album from 1991 sounds as if the very twilight of all was imminent. Multi-facetted arrangements & a sound so big it could crumble mountains. Black Mark.

It was almost inevitable that a follow-up release to 1990's watershed Hammerheart album, dealing with very much the same subject (historical themes and pagan beliefs of the Viking peoples), was fated to prove somewhat disappointing; and despite a valiant effort on the part of Bathory mastermind Seth Quorthon, 1991's Twilight of the Gods has often unfairly languished in the shadows of its noteworthy predecessor. For the record, its tracks were even more epic in length and scope, its subject matter even more tragic and depressing, but perhaps the oppressive weight of it all was simply more than most could bear. Still, when removed from this chronological experiment, there's no denying that Twilight of the Gods is one heck of a heavy metal album. Maybe it could have used a little more of the old-school black metal simplicity of early Bathory, but the band's forward momentum was such at this juncture in their career that a look back, however brief, was simply not in the cards. Starting off with the 14-minute glory of the title opus, the album almost always maintains a steady head of steam with the high-caliber songwriting heard on the likes of "Blood and Iron" and "Under the Runes," with its specially beautiful and memorable acoustic guitar intro. The superb "Through Blood by Thunder" is introduced by yet another elegant guitar melody and a dramatic spoken-word section, but the plodding tandem of "To Enter Your Mountain" and "Bond of Blood" is where distraction inevitably sets in. Finally, the previous album's namesake tune, "Hammerheart," bring listeners to the finish line with a virtually all-vocal performance, and though Quorthon's dubious singing ability continues to raise eyebrows on occasion, this is usually compensated by the wondrous music itself. Also deserving of praise are his virtuously performed guitar leads, whose contributions can at times be overlooked in the melee of grandiose arrangements all around. Once again a stellar outing for Bathory, Twilight of the Gods would close yet another chapter in the group's varied history, as Quorthon decided to pause and reflect on his past achievements with a series of retrospective collections, after which Bathory veered toward new horizons once again. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Bathory Hammerheart CD (1990)
Twilight Of The Gods
$16.29 Regularly cited as the archetypical Viking metal album, Bathory's Hammerheart remains an unqualified triumph for the pioneering Swedish act. Merging audacious lyrical ambitions with a sense of musical grandeur akin to the greatest epic works in metal history -- among which it is frequently numbered -- Hammerheart is a fully fleshed concept album, and a literate one at that. Chronicling with great detail and drama the Christian invasion of Scandinavia during ...

Twilight Of The Gods
$9.15 Possibly the first true example of what is commonly called Viking metal, 1988's Blood Fire Death inaugurated an incredibly prolific period in Bathory's history -- so prolific and creative, in fact, that an entire album's worth of material recorded at this time would be shelved for years before eventually finding room for release as 1996's Blood on Ice. Featuring dramatic orchestral arrangements backing horrific banshee cries and galloping battalions of doom and destruction, "Oden's Ride Over Nordland" was as ...

Twilight Of The Gods
$5.49 Photographer: Mark Tucker . Capitol's 2005 release The Best of Dan Seals is a repackaging of the 1987 Liberty release of the same name. Although this doesn't contain all of his hits, it does have 11 of Seals' biggest contemporary country hits from the mid- and late '80s, including the number one singles "Three Time Loser," "You Still Move Me," "Bop," "Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)," "Meet Me in Montana," "I Will Be There," and "One Friend." While it could be a little more comprehensive -- and it's hard not to think that the ...
| | Bon Jovi Have A Nice Day CD (2005) Limited Edition; Digipak; DualDisc
Twilight Of The Gods
$16.95 This deluxe limited edition includes a dualdisc featuring the complete album including a song featuring Jennifer Nettle of Sugarland, on the CD side, plus on the DVD side, a Bon Jovi EPK - behind the scenes and 5 live performances.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals); Richie Sambora (guitar, background vocals); David Bryan (keyboards); Hugh McDonald (bass guitar); Tico Torres (drums). Additional personnel: Jennifer Nettles (vocals). Have a Nice Day, Bon Jovi's ninth studio album of original material, picks up where 2002's Bounce left off, showcasing a harder, heavier band than either 2000's Crush or Jon Bon Jovi's 1997 solo effort, Destination Anywhere. Not only that, but this 2005 album finds Jon Bon Jovi picking up on the serious undercurrent of Bounce, writing a series of angry, somber neo-protest songs that form the heart of this record. While he's not exactly explicitly political here, there's little question that he's dissatisfied with the world today, whether it's about life in small town America or the sorry state of pop music; he even goes so far to write a variation on Bob Dylan's classic "Chimes of Freedom" with "Bells of Freedom." Since he's stretching out lyrically, the band finds a comfort zone in sticking in the tried-and-true arena rock that's been their signature sound for 20 years now. While they sound appropriately grand and powerful -- this is one of the few groups that sounds right at home in large venues -- at times they pump up their choruses a little bit too much, so they sound strident, not anthemic. That heavy-handedness, coupled with a loud but colorless production from Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora, and John Shanks, with Desmond Child acting as executive producer for the whole thing, gives Have a Nice Day a sound that's a bit too ...
