Country Mix Series: Gospel Country music CDs
$12.55 Although for the rest of his life, underinformed fans of 1990s pop will forever be calling Darius Rucker "Hootie," the former Hootie & the Blowfish singer-songwriter makes his solo debut with a perfectly credible take on mainstream contemporary Nashville country. The laid-back, largely acoustic folk-pop of Hootie & the Blowfish was never that far removed from contemporary country in the first place, so only the fact that Rucker is the first major African-American country star since the heyday of Charley Pride makes the stylistic crossover out of the ordinary. First single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," a Top 5 hit on the Billboard country charts even prior to the album's release, makes clear how comfortable Rucker is with the blend of the Eagles and the Dixie Chicks that is contemporary ...

Country Mix Series: Gospel Country album
$14.75 If there's a candidate for the Eagles of the 21st century, it's surely Rascal Flatts, with their seamless blend of country, rock, and pop, and their discography of multi-platinum albums hitting the top of both the country and pop charts. Their sixth album, UNSTOPPABLE, makes the aforementioned blend so smooth that only the most stubborn pigeonholer would still label them a country act. If not for the recurring pedal-steel swells and the occasional vocal twang, there'd be nothing keeping UNSTOPPABLE from being a straight-up mainstream pop album. The preponderance of big, bold power ballads should appeal to fans of, say, Bryan Adams or Sheryl Crow just as easily as country ...

$16.45 GINNY PETERS. THE JOURNEY.Ginny would be the quiet achiever of New Zealand Country Music. Having had a great deal of success with her writing and singing over the past number of years with "THE JOURNEY" featuring a few of her recorded songs. For example, the song, "I ONLY SEE YOU" has been recorded eleven times by artists in, England (1), USA (3), Australia (1), and New Zealand (6). "IN THE ARMS OF A MEMORY" has had similar coverage and in 1994 was a top ten hit in Australia as recorded by Brian Letton and helped propel him to the Tamworth Golden Guitar Male Vocal of the year final in that year.On "THE JOURNEY", 14 of the tracks are by artists from the USA, Australia and New Zealand with 1 by Ginny herself. Among these artists are, Nashville CMA Hall of Fame member, Cliffie Stone, Australian award winning artists Brian Letton and Craig Byrne along with multi platinum selling New Zealand vocalist, Dennis Marsh.Ginny has recorded for several labels herself, such as Epic, RCA, Allied International and Viking in New Zealand. In the US she has recorded for Evolve, Trend and Playback. Her recording of "Freight Train" for Playback in the US made the Cashbox top 100 in 1988 as did her following single, "Old Fashioned Lover".Rajon records have just re-released some of Ginny's tracks in New Zealand and Australia on the boxed set, "The Great Kiwi Country".In the liner notes for "THE JOURNEY" Walt Trott, (editor AFM'S Nashville Association of Musicians newspaper) ...

| | Willie Nelson Last Of The Breed CDs (2007)
Country Mix Series: Gospel Country album
$16.95 LAST OF THE BREED partners Willie Nelson with two other legends of maverick country, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. With a collection of talent this archetypal, the title sounds less like a boast and more like a statement of fact. Price is an old-school country gentlemen hip enough to hang with the Outlaws, while Haggard and Nelson are probably the only pot-smoking hippies universally accepted by the red states.
LAST OF THE BREED is an easy-on-the-ears honky-tonk shuffle of a record. The trio ambles through many of the classics that made them famous and, surprisingly, the weather of age suits them well--particularly Price, always the best singer of the bunch, whose robust tenor has lost a step or two over the years. The lack of power gives frail yet touching readings to, among others, his own "Heartaches By The Number," and Hank Williams's classic "Lost Highway." The latter song features the angelic Jordanaires, and is probably the least ravaged and thereby most tragic version of this oft-covered song. The listener is led to think: If these guys can get lost, then we're all in trouble. Not to be outdone by Price, Haggard brings the only new original composition to this session, the easily mournful "If I Ever Get Lucky," ...
