| | Hot Flashes: Rare High Quality Short Lived Bands CD (2006)
Five Of Us music CDs
$12.89 Vintage Musical Productions does it again! Hot Flashes: Rare High Quality Short Lived Bands features the now-underground jazz of the 1920s and '30s. The tunes collected here are mostly by acts that cut only a couple of sides and disappeared into the ether of musical history. The only exception is the KXYZ Novelty Band who cut six of the sides here. The compelling thing about them is that none of their tunes were the least bit "novelty." These are all hard-blowing early good-time trad jazz played by bands who understood the formulations of W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and King Oliver, as well as the other sounds of Dixieland. Check out the wailing blues of the "Greasy Plate Stomp" by Trombone Red & His Blue Six, or the hard strut of "Deep Henderson" by Charlie Skeete, or even the killer "One 'O Clock Blues," by Joe Tibbs & His Connies Inn Orchestra. There is fine music galore here for any vintage jazz fan, and most of these cuts have never seen the light of day on CD before. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Jack Teagarden 1930 Studio Sessions CD (2006)
Five Of Us songs
$16.49 In 2006, the Jazz Oracle label released a thrilling 25-track collection of recordings that document JAck Teagarden's professional activity during the first grueling months of the Great Depression. Unlike his collaborations with Eddie Condon, these records do not necessarily spotlight Teagarden as soloist or vocalist. 1930 was a banner year in the golden age of squeaky clean crooners and pop vocalists. The music is deliciously dated and heavily arranged, with an innocent charm that is peculiarly reassuring. Vocals are perpetrated by Smith Ballew, Irving Kaufman, Paul Small, and Artie Dunn, who ...
| | Eddie South Recorded In Hollywood 1933 CDs (2006)
Five Of Us album
$40.99 All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Eddie South was a talented jazz violinist who never really achieved the fame that he deserved; though he was a contemporary of Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith, most of his work was for radio and films. As a result, relatively few of his recordings have appeared on CD. So the discovery of 16 of his earliest radio transcription programs, all sponsored by a women's beauty product called Cheloni-Skin, is an important find. They are collected in their entirety on this three-CD compilation, complete with unidentified announcers (and commercials if there is a music bed by South). While the performances ranges from easy listening to Latin pop themes of the era, tangos, gypsy swing, novelty numbers and downright corn, the clarity and preservation of ...
| | Dupree Bolton Fireball CD (2008)
Five Of Us CD music
$13.79 The other tracks from June 1963 feature a front line of Bolton, the obscure alto saxophonist Earl Anderza, young tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman, and pianist Roosevelt Wardell's trio. Anderza has a strained legato sound that underscores the post-bop track "Joe & I," while Bolton's completely sad brass sound identifies the 100-percent regretful "Midnight Lament." It should come as no surprise that Bolton and Anderza were clashing, battling for solo time. In Oklahoma, eight inmates including Bolton join music director and artist in residence Dr. Paul Brewer (at the time of this writing employed at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI) and bassist Elisha Martin for four numbers. Brewer penned the unsteady "Monk's Tunnel" and doubles on trombone or Fender Rhodes piano as Bolton and fellow trumpeter Monty Boyd ease into a modern swing. ...

| | Johnny Hodges Jeep Is Jumpin' CDs (2007) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Five Of Us album
$22.05 In celebration of what would have been his hundredth birthday, saxophonist Johnny Hodges is lovingly commemorated by the Living Era label with a special two-disc Centenary Issue intended as a complementary sequel to Jeep's Blues (Living Era 5180), a 24-track compilation that covered the years 1928-1941. The Jeep Is Jumpin' should not be confused with the similarly titled 32-track Verve reissue LP from the '70s, nor with Proper's hugely satisfying 94-track box set issued in 2003. What Living Era has carefully presented here are 46 of Hodges' very best recordings as a leader. These sides were cut for the Bluebird, Mercer, Sunrise, Vogue, Clef and Norgran labels between July 3, 1941 and January 7, 1955. Living Era does the listener a huge favor by presenting the music chronologically; the liner notes ...
