$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- ...

$9.69 Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on January 19, 1974. Originally released on Atlantic (1667). Includes original release liner notes by Sy Johnson as well as reissue liner notes by Andrew Homzy.

This is not the album to experience Mingus the great composer--but for Mingus the bandleader, this is the place. This live album, recorded in 1974, has the Mingus group at the time: George Adams, Dannie Richmond, Don Pullen and Hamiet Bluiett, joined by alumni of past bands: Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Jon Faddis, John Handy, and Charles McPherson, for a rollicking old-fashioned jam session. Mingus picks compositions by one of his biggest influences, Duke Ellington, and everybody (except for Mingus and Richmond) gets to show their stuff and wail.

| | Mike Smith Unit 7: A Tribute To Cannonball Adderly CD (1989)
Modern Jazz At The Royal Festival Hall, October 1954. songs
$9.99 Mike Smith wears his Cannonball Adderley influences proudly, and on this tribute disk the parallels are even more evident. That said, Smith, a fine, articulate player and capable leader, is just as easily recognizable as a disciple of Phil Woods or Sonny Stitt, players with a more precise, incisive approach to the alto sax compared to Adderley's earthy virtuosity. Generally, Smith and company make tidier packages of these pieces than the Adderley quintet did in the late '50s and early to mid-'60s. What the Chicago-based Smith and company dispense with in unbridled soul, they make up for with tight ensemble playing and coolly incandescent solo work. Pianist Jodie Christian is a main contributor to the clean lines that shape these performances. Trumpeter Ron Friedman, like Smith, brings his own bright, agile sound to the session. Guitarist Sid Jacobs is on hand for one track, the jazz samba "La ...

Modern Jazz At The Royal Festival Hall, October 1954. album
$26.15 This limited-edition two-disk 40-song compilation is made up of two solo albums cut for Atlantic Records, Love Ballads and Clyde, as well as The Mercury Sessions Live (aka Live at the Apollo), which included three bonus studio tracks. Clyde McPhatter recorded for MGM in between Atlantic and Mercury, but none of those tracks are included. McPhatter fans will note that his 1962 Top Ten hit, "Lover Please" (his most successful Mercury recording and final Top 40 hit), is missing, as is ...
| | Michael Musillami Groove Teacher CD (1999)
Modern Jazz At The Royal Festival Hall, October 1954. CD music
$18.95 Musillami's band gets bigger with each installment of his Playscape trilogy. On part three, Groove Teacher, the ensemble grows to a septet with the inclusion of tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore. Trumpeter Claudio Roditi replaces Randy Brecker from the previous album, Mar's Bars; bassist Charles (Chip) Jackson also comes on board for the first time. The four who have remained steady throughout are guitarist Musillami, pianist Kent Hewitt, drummer Steve Johns, and alto saxophonist/flutist Thomas Chapin. Hewitt and Chapin are particularly brilliant on this record, having had ample opportunity to absorb Musillami's concept as a composer and bandleader. But, not to be outdone, newcomer Jackson plays a number of showstopping solos during the course of the program. There are quite a few unexpected twists in this batch of original compositions, ...
