Personnel includes: Jay Collins (flute, saxophone).
Personnel: Jay Collins (flute, bansuri, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Amos Hoffman (guitar, oud, percussion); Johannes Weidenmueller (bass instrument); Michael Mazor (drums, percussion).
Jay Collins has been influenced by many musicians, among them Steve Lacy, Dewey Redman, and Don Cherry. It is from the latter player and others like him that he has been encouraged to take a more adventurous approach to jazz. One area he has explored with success is drawing on the music of non-Western cultures, and this album integrates jazz with music from the Middle East and India, even though all but one of the compositions were written by Collins. Employing not only Western musical instruments but also the bansuri (Indian flute) and the oud (Middle Eastern lute), Collins and his band create engaging and intriguing mixtures of musical genre, often within the same song. "Ladino Song" combines Asian-based music with a Johannes Weidenmueller bass playing a bop line, creating an unusual musical spice. "Little Miracles" features Collins' sax wailing away on what sounds like a Jewish rhapsody interspersed with Michael Mazor's bop rhythms, while "Zukra" is the kind of music one associates with Turkish dances (aka "belly dancing"). With Collins' both languorous and probing tenor sax leading the way, "Oasis" suggests the relief one feels upon finding a safe haven in the middle of the desert. This album will attract those who want to be challenged (and entertained) and who believe that there should be no inhibitions in the improvisational adventures that help make jazz the compelling music that it is. Collins and his confreres are excellent musicians and are well versed in fusing music from different cultures with jazz forms. This expertise gives this album a high level of authenticity. Cross Culture is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

Recorded between May 21, 1955 and March 26, 1964. Includes liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, No. Hollywood, California).
This is part of MCA's 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection series.
Composer: Chuck Berry.
Like any record company worth its salt, MCA knows a good gimmick when it sees it, and when the millennium came around...well, the 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection series wasn't too far behind. Supposedly, the millennium is a momentous occasion, but it's hard to feel that way when it's used as another excuse to turn out a slew of budget-line comps. But apart from the presumptuous title, 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection turns out to be a very good budget-line series. True, it's impossible for any of these brief collections to be definitive, but they're nevertheless solid samplers that don't feature a bad song in the bunch. For example, take Chuck Berry's 20th Century volume -- it's an irresistible ...

Recorded live at Yubin Chokin Hall, Tokyo, Japan on October 22, 1983. Includes liner notes by Robert Pruter.
Thankfully, Otis Clay is an artist who refused to change with the times. When the R&B audience embraced disco and, later, urban contemporary, the hard-edged belter wisely stuck with the type of raw, unapologetically Southern-sounding soul that put him on the map. Though he calls Chicago home, Clay's approach has always shouted "Memphis!" in no uncertain terms. A 41-year-old Clay was clearly very much in his prime when this magnificent live date was recorded in 1983. Sparing no passion on such treasures as "Holding on to a Dying Love" and Al Green's "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)," ...

Tin Angel
Odetta Tin Angel CD  (1954)

Cross Culture
CD $8.39  Audio Samples
Recorded in 1953 & 1954.
Although the 1993 CD version of this album is credited to Odetta and titled The Tin Angel, it's actually a reissue of a Fantasy LP credited to Odetta & Larry, which bore the slightly different title The Tin Angel Presents Odetta & Larry. That original LP had 13 tracks recorded in 1953 and 1954, some of them live at the Tin Angel club in San Francisco, with Larry Mohr contributing some banjo and harmony and lead vocals, though Odetta was the more prominent presence. This source of confusion duly noted, this is pretty much an Odetta album in most respects, as she takes a considerably larger part of the vocal duties on a set of traditional folk material including such standards as "John Henry," "Rock Island Line," and "Old Cotton Fields at Home," as well as some blues and spirituals, plus a good version of Woody Guthrie's "The Car-Car Song." Odetta's stirring vocal style is pretty fully formed on this, the first group of her recordings in wide distribution, as is her ability to emit bluesy grunts, ...

Blues: The Essential Album
Blues: The Essential Album CD  (2004)

Cross Culture
CD $16.19
The title of this two-CD compilation rather wildly overstates its importance, as does the subtitle "the most important artists, the classic performances, the key songs." Few would consider, for example, Little Esther's "Lost in a Dream" or Big Joe Turner's "S.K. Blues" among the greatest blues cuts of all time, and as significant as Helen Humes and Willie Love may be, few would consider them among the most important blues artists. Putting the over-hype to the side, this is a decent and wide-ranging, though unfocused, collection of 32 blues songs spanning the 1930s to the 1990s. Everything here is worthwhile, and a few of the cuts are indeed certified classics: Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog," Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool," B.B. King's "Sweet Sixteen, Pts. 1-2," Junior Wells' "Hoodoo Man Blues," and Canned Heat's "Goin' Up the Country." Plenty of other major blues performers are represented, too, including Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins. The track selection, ...
