| | Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan CDs (2002)
Strange Kind Of Feelin' songs
$14.89 Recorded between 1980 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Andy Aledort.
Epic's THE ESSENTIAL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN AND DOUBLE TROUBLE gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work. [This compilation was also released as a three-disc ...
| | Etta James Heart Of A Woman CD (1999)
Strange Kind Of Feelin' album
$8.75 (MP3 Available for Download) HEART OF A WOMAN was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
There's no denying that Etta James is a powerhouse, one of the finest blues singers of the 20th century. Perhaps that's what makes her latter-day records so frustrating: The talent is still apparent and abundant, but the albums themselves are unsatisfying. All the ingredients are in the right place, but something went slightly awry during the execution. After all, Heart of a Woman is a great idea for an album. James chose 11 love songs from her favorite female singers -- Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, and Carmen McRae -- augmenting the album with a new version of her signature song, "At Last." She has recorded several of these songs before (including Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed," which inexplicably became a standard for both her and McRae), but the difference with Heart of a Woman is the context. Here, they're put in a smooth jazz setting, masterminded by James, who has producer credit. No matter how well she sings the songs here -- and she still possesses an exceptionally strong voice, robust and filled with passion -- the well-scrubbed, glossy surfaces on the record keeps it from being engaging. It's not bad listening, it just never has the emotional impact James intended it to have. At times, it's hard not to wish that she worked with a producer who brought her back to the organic sound of her classic '50s and '60s sessions, but James has been pursuing this smoothed-out style for a decade now. It's clear that this is what she wants to do. She still sounds good, and that means her latter-day albums are listenable -- but they don't resonate like the best of her records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Steve Jordan Many Sounds Of Esteban "Steve" Jordan CD (1985)
Strange Kind Of Feelin' CD music
$14.29 (MP3 Available for Download) This is a flamboyant artist operating in a style of music that is already pretty rowdy to begin with. The legend of Jordan being the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion might strike listeners as hype, but in reality is accurate more from a musical point of view than the obvious similarity in freaky appearances that both artists share. (Jordan has a wild mop of black hair and wears an eye patch, for which he was given the nickname 'El Parche). But a typical recording finds him coming across as powerfully as the Hendrix guitar style: right out front of his backing bands, his tone of the industrial strength variety, strong and cutting. This set intelligently combines his earliest recordings with music from about eight years later, during which time he developed from an excellent but fairly typical player to an iconoclastic wild man, throwing in all manner of stylistic asides including fusion jazz drum fills, satirical breakdowns á la Spike Jones, and even country & western. Just as Hendrix mastered a variety of effects devices, Jordan plugs his accordion into phase shifters and fuzz boxes and figures out how to get a totally personal sound, enhancing the traditional tone of the instrument in ways that always draw the listener in. All the music on this set is extremely enjoyable but of course it is the later music that is most innovative. He seems to be forging a trail that few would follow, however, as only a few eclectic artists such as Doug ...
