(1 Customer Review)
Astrud Gilberto second solo album, THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE, which at 25 minutes is one of the shortest LPs ever released. It's a good one though, as Astrud breaks free of bossa nova typecasting and emerges as a full-fledged '60s songbird, with her near definitive version of "The Shadow Of Your Smile." A special hybrid, she's neither a Brazilian nor an American singer, and not really an "international' one either. Her wistful, amateur sound has worn extremely well however--it has the virtue of simplicity and honesty as her absolutely definitive version of "Funny World" from the now forgotten Italian exploitation film MALAMONDO proves.

| | Astrud Gilberto Look To The Rainbow CD (1966)
Shadow Of Your Smile
$10.85 Many of Astrud Gilberto's later albums focus on bossa nova interpretations of jazz standards and pop songs, but 1967's LOOK TO THE RAINBOW consists primarily of Portuguese-language sambas and cariocas, many from the pen of the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Gilberto's version of Jobim's "Bim Bom" is the definitive interpretation of this much-recorded song. Other highlights include "Berimbau," the title track, and the melancholy "El Preciso Aprender A Ser So (Learn To Live Alone)." Gilberto is in excellent voice throughout, and producer Creed Taylor's orchestrations are kept low-key so as not to detract from that magical voice. Peculiarly, this 45-minute CD ends with the six songs from Gilberto's 1966 classic A CERTAIN SMILE, A CERTAIN SADNESS that do not appear at the end of the simultaneous CD reissue of 1967's BEACH ...

| | Steve Kuhn October Suite CD (1966) Remastered; Digipak
Shadow Of Your Smile
$9.89 Composer and arranger Gary McFarland was well-known in the 1960s for his film-scoring abilities and his charting skills with mid-sized bands. McFarland was also, however, a jazz fan, and particularly one of scalar pianist Steve Kuhn. This project features Kuhn in the center of a program made up entirely of McFarland compositions, all but two of which were written specifically for the album. Recorded in 1966, it is an anomaly in the Impulse catalog of the time in that it did not pursue the free jazz realms with the vengeance that most of the label's other acts did during that year. It is also significant that it caught the attention of a young Manfred Eicher, who later signed Kuhn to his ECM label based on the strengths of this recording. Like Keith Jarrett, Kuhn is in the pointillist school of jazz pianists of the era. Unlike Jarrett, Kuhn does not consider force in his attack as necessary as his labelmate does. Instrumentally, Kuhn's customary trio situation -- which is dutifully performed with zeal by Ron Carter and drummer Marty Morell -- is augmented with a string quartet on half the record, and with a wind trio with harp on the other half. The tracks on Side One are, in some ways, less revolutionary ...
| | Donald Byrd Royal Flush: RVG Series CD (1961)
Shadow Of Your Smile
$9.39 In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading trumpeters on the American jazz scene. Recorded in autumn 1961, ROYAL FLUSH is hard-swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?) and deep-grooving hard bop. It does, however, point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
In the early 1960s, long before he'd pursue a funkier, electric direction, Donald Byrd was one of the leading straight-ahead trumpeters on the American jazz scene. ROYAL FLUSH, recorded in autumn 1961, is bold, swinging (with the baritone sax of Pepper Adams, how could it not be?), and deep-grooving hard bop. Yet, it does at times point to aspects of jazz's future--note the poignant "Requiem," contributed by a young Herbie Hancock (this session's pianist) and the inventive drumming of Billy Higgins.
Donald Byrd was at his peak as a straight-ahead hard bop band leader in the early '60s, turning in a series of remarkably solid, enjoyable sessions for Blue Note. Royal ...

Shadow Of Your Smile
$12.05 Released a month before the 2004 U.S. presidential elections, Peace Not War, Vol. 2 is a collection of 37 songs on two discs, one called "Beats" and the other "Chords." Everything was chosen from artist submissions, which means that, besides big names like Michael Franti, Faithless, Ani DiFranco, Anti-Flag, and quite a few groups off the Quannum label, there are a bunch of little-known musicians, as well. That's not to say there are poorly produced, messy songs on here. Thanks to easy access to reasonable home recording equipment, the tracks all have a professional quality to them, and many of the lesser-known indie artists (Son of Nun for example) sound every bit as good as their more famous counterparts. The musicians, all from the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, fall easily into the left side of the political spectrum and do a good deal of Bush/Blair/Howard bashing and questioning of the war on terrorism, especially those included on the "Beats" disc, which makes sense, as hip-hop generally tends to deal more directly and candidly with whichever issues it addresses. The "Chords" disc, with both hard electric and soft acoustic guitars (which, ...
