| | Wynonna What The World Needs Now CD (2003)
Hard Salsa: Coast To Coast album
$6.09 By the time of this album's release, the world had already become accustomed to (ostensibly) country singers mixing their Nashville twang with rock, pop, and more. When Wynonna Judd started her solo career, though, she was something of an anomaly in the mainstream country world for doing just that. So while WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE might not sound particularly groundbreaking among its contemporaries, it's just following through on a thread Wynonna started quite a while before. When she breaks into a near-rap on the break of "It All Comes Down to Love," or comes off like a quirky, female John Parr on "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis," it's an eclecticism well-earned. And when she takes the Elvis thing a step further by updating the King's classic "Burnin' Love," or gives Foreigner a soulful treatment with the help of Jeff Beck on "I Want to Know What Love Is," she gives a hint of where contemporary country might be headed.
2003 album includes the hit single, 'What The World Needs', 'Flies On The Butter (You Can't Go Home Again)' feat. a special appearance by Wynonna & Naomi Judd (The Judds), 'I Want To Know What Love Is' feat. a special appearance from Jeff Beck, 'Burnin' Love' from the film 'Lilo & Stitch', & 'You Are' from the film 'Someone Like You'. 14 tracks. Curb.
Personnel includes: Wynonna (vocals); John Willis (acoustic guitar, banjo); ...
| | Claude Bolling Drum Is A Woman CD (2005)
Hard Salsa: Coast To Coast CD music
$16.79 Recorded live at the Theatre National De Chaillot, Paris, France on April 4 & 5, 1996.
In 1956, Duke Ellington's show A Drum Is a Woman was broadcast on television. Although utilizing the Ellington orchestra, the emphasis was on a somewhat abstract and bizarre story line involving characters named Madame Zajj and Carribee Joe. Zajj, who is born as Joe's drum, travels the world and becomes famous but still dreams of Carribee Joe, who preferred to remain in the jungle. Forty years after the Ellington telecast, French bandleader Claude Bolling revived the story for a show and this recording. Jeffery Smith is the narrator (at times sounding a bit like Duke Ellington), and he shares the vocals with Laika and Francine Romain while joined by the Claude Bolling Orchestra. The revival performance is well done, but the original story is so odd that the results are just a historical curiosity. ~ Scott Yanow
The musical that Orson Welles suggested to Duke Ellington, "A Drum Is A Woman" has become a parable in the history of jazz. Created for American television in 1956, Duke Ellington entrusted his disciple and friend Claude Bolling with the European adaptat

| | James Brown Godfather Of Soul CD (1998)
Hard Salsa: Coast To Coast music CDs
$5.95 The Godfather of Soul has several greatest-hits compilation to his name, and with good reason. Anyone with over four decades of solid soul and funk classics most definitely has enough to fill volume after volume of greatest-hits and best-of releases. While this isn't necessarily a definitive best-of collection, it most certainly covers the majority of his earliest (and some would say best) works. Most of these songs are already in the die-hard fan's collection, so this release would serve the newcomer or casual fan best. ~ Rob Theakston
A budget-line two-fer featuring two of James Brown's live performances from the 1980s, Goldenlane's Godfather of Soul release is as generic as its title, if not more so. The '80s weren't the best of times for Brown, and it doesn't help that the two live recordings here -- a CD titled "Live in New York (1980)" and a DVD titled "Live at Castain Park (1985)," both hourlong shows featuring essentially the same set list -- are totally uneventful. Granted, it's impressive that Brown was still out there performing in the '80s, which was his fourth decade on-stage. He's still energetic and full of life here, for sure. However, he's all show biz at this late point, performing many of his greatest hits with a faceless backing band that seems well rehearsed yet showcases little creative spark. To make matters worse, the live CD recording is edited so that the tracks fade in and out, and the DVD consists mainly of a single camera focused on Brown exclusively, with an occasional shot of the entire band. All of this leaves room for few surprises. In fact, the biggest surprise is liable to be how lackluster this two-disc package actually is -- not only ...
