Gary Busey, Jan Michael Vincent, Lee Purcell, Patti D'Arbanville, Sam Melville, William Katt - Director: John Milius BIG WEDNESDAY follows the lives of Matt (Jan-Michael Vincent), Jack (William Katt), and Leroy (Gary Busey), three young Californians who live to surf. Together, the boys ride the waves, throw beach parties, and, of course, get into scrapes. However, as the years go by, the trio must contend with the escalating war in Vietnam and embark on the painful road to maturity.
Although director and screenwriter John Milius usually dwells in a macho world of action, his meditation on the waning of youthful dreams, partially based on his own childhood, is surprisingly heartfelt. While the film depicts the close friendship shared by Matt, Jack, and Leroy, it also does justice to their favorite pastime with stunningly photographed surfing sequences. Widely considered to be one of the best surfer movies of all time, BIG WEDNESDAY pinpoints a specific era with pitch-perfect skill and nostalgia. Theatrical release: 1978
Filming locations: California and Hawaii.
BIG WEDNESDAY takes place in five acts: South Swell (summer 1962), West Swell (1965), North Swell (summer 1968), Great Swell (spring 1974), and finally Big Wednesday (1977).
BIG WEDNESDAY was released the same year as THE DEER HUNTER (which looked at the Vietnam war through the eyes of a group of friends in Pennsylvania), and its political content was amplified by the comparison between the two films.
There is rumored to be an R-rated version of the film, never shown in the U.S., from which 8 minutes of rescue scenes and dialogue between Sally and Bear were cut in order to achieve a PG rating. Big Wednesday Reviews: "...A cult fave....A mature ode to lost youth..."
-- Jonathan Crocker, Total Film "...[The surfing scenes] are exciting....The camera is placed almost inside the waves..."

Big Wednesday Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) It's just the lemon next to the pie Big Wednesday looks at the lives of 3 California Surfers, Matt, Jack and Leroy in the good old days of the 60's. The story revolves around the 3 surfers lives as they deal with being drafted into the Army to go serve in Vietnam and the way their close friendship during their teen years remains strong when they meet up again in later life to surf a huge swell. The bear,an old big wave surfer (surfboard maker and garbage man) guides the guys through life as he himself goes from having a surf business to loosing it all and becoming a garbage man. A must see film for any surfer, it must go down in surf film making history as the all time classic. Submitted by a reviewer (Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"BiG Hype" This movie is pretentious and overrated. I watched the first 15 minutes and switched off. Gave to a charity collection and felt cleansed. Submitted by Stevie C. (Ingerland.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
EPIC! Terrific film about 3 friends growing up, from High School to marriage & kids. The common denominator is surfing, but that's just part of the saga! Vincent, Bussy, & Katt are all terrific; a MUST SEE! Submitted by silver (Costa Rica) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
Not just a good surf video This movie has a good story, besides having excellent footage of surfing. Submitted by a reviewer (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$8.85 Standouts include "Bitter-Sweet," a clear homage to the bombast and fading glory of German cabaret music, and the work of Kurt Weill in particular, and "Casanova," a dense funk track carried along on a complex bass line and a wavering synthesizer. The album's last track, "Prairie Rose," leads off with a heavily echoed guitar solo, and features some of Andrew Mackay's most expressive saxophone playing. Everything from the famously controversial cover art (which depicts two very scantily clad models) to the varied, often spectacular music within, marks COUNTRY LIFE as unique. It is one of the finest moments in the band's impressive catalogue.
From the idiosyncratic art rock of their self-titled debut to the seductive pop of albums like AVALON, Roxy Music covered a lot of ground, but COUNTRY LIFE, which falls somewhere in between, synthesizes all of their strengths. Singer Bryan Ferry's vision of sophisticated, "gentleman" rock emerges on this release, yet the strident, driving quality crucial to the band's early sound still looms large. The combination of textures ...

$12.69 Mike Hynson and Robert August were among the world's best surfers in the mid-1960s. Bruce Brown was a surfing enthusiast with a few largely unseen films on the sport. The three became legendary when Brown followed the two Californians around the world, filming their quest for the perfect wave in THE ENDLESS SUMMER. Brown captured his subjects hanging ten in their home waters as well as in Hawaii, Australia, Tahiti, Africa, and New Zealand.
While the surfing footage is amazing, what truly sets this study of the sport apart from its brethren is the larger questions posed in the athletes' search. As they move from ocean to ocean, Hynson and August seek deeper meaning in their lives and come to a spiritual understanding of their purpose on the waves. The thoughtful protagonists also challenge the stereotype of the brain-dead surfer dude. The laid-back guitar sounds of the Sandals, along with Bruce Brown's own wry narration, ...

$10.15 With STEP INTO LIQUID, Dana Brown emerges from his legendary father's shadow and adds another classic film to the surf documentary canon. Son of hugely influential filmmaker Bruce Brown (THE ENDLESS SUMMER, ON ANY SUNDAY), Dana's debut as a writer/director is a gorgeously photographed tribute to surfing and the individuals who love it. Journeying all across to the world to show just how universally praised a sport--and lifestyle--surfing is, Brown uses his natural enthusiasm and humor to great effect, narrating the film with an infectious, breezy optimism. He presents a wide range of surfers, from superstars (Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton, Keala Kennelly) to amateurs, including an old man who hasn't missed a day of surfing in over 25 years. The locations include such unknown surf spots as Wisconsin, Texas, and even Ireland, to the more widely regarded waters of Hawaii, California, and Australia. Brown wisely saves the best for last, as a group of incredibly bold surfers journey out to sea to test out their skills ...

$6.99 Chazz (Brendan Fraser), Pip (Adam Sandler), and Rex (Steve Buscemi) are the Lone Rangers, a heavy metal rock group that's going nowhere fast. Tired of playing lame gigs and trying to win over record executives, the band heads to its local radio station in a desperate attempt to have its demo played. Unfortunately, things go awry when toy guns are pulled out and mistaken for real ones in the heat of the moment, forcing the band to hold the station's employees hostage. Surrounded by the police and thousands of rock & roll fans who have flocked to the station, the boys become unlikely heroes, a voice for those who choose not to conform to corporate America. A little lighter than Michael Lehmann's dark comedy directorial debut HEATHERS, this film offers plenty of physical comedy from Michael Richards and Chris Farley as well as humorous performances from the boys in the band, Michael McKean as the station manager, and Joe Mantegna as DJ Ian the Shark. Live performances by White Zombie and the Galactic Cowboys set the tone for the film, which also boasts an impressive soundtrack.
In an attempt to get their songs played on the radio, a struggling thrash-metal ...
