Baby Snakes album
$11.65 The 1998 Holland collection Definitive Collection isn't really definitive, of course -- it's the kind of title common to budget-line discs or European and Asian-only compilations -- but it is a good sampler of ELO's hits all the same, containing 19 songs, including many, many hits: "Showdown," "Can't Get It out of My Head," "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic," "Livin' Thing," "Turn to Stone," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "Rock N' Roll Is King." There are enough absent hits and album tracks to make this not worth seeking out -- especially since the "Limited Gold Edition" statement on the back of the box does not mean that this is a remastered, audiophile gold disc -- but if it can be found at a good price, it's a nice sampler for casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Rick Wakeman Songs Of The Middle Earth: A Tribute To Lord Of The Rings CD (2002)
Baby Snakes music CDs
$6.59 Thanks to the timely release of the massive Lord of the Rings movie cycle and perhaps seeing a potentially new and untapped fan market, BMG appropriated material from Rick Wakeman's Heritage Suite and Seven Wonders of the World recordings, retitled the songs based on various names and places in Tolkien's novels, and repackaged this CD to appear as if Wakeman spent time toiling away in his studio to work on a tribute album. This illusion is passed off successfully for casual listeners, but die-hard fans may already own most of this material. Nevertheless, the production here is exactly what you would expect from a Wakeman record: crisp, clean production with technical wizardry and musical acrobatics abound. While Tolkien fans may ...

Although Lewis & Clark: Sounds of Discovery wasn't actually used as the soundtrack accompaniment for a video presentation, it certainly plays like one. Producer David Swenson masterminded the project, finding fiddle tunes extant at the time of the Lewis & Clark expedition and mixing them with traditional Native American songs and dances, as well as nature-sound recordings done in animal habitats the expedition may have passed through. The result is not only an intriguing audio fantasy/journey, but a well-performed and assembled collection of old-time American music, ...

MADHOUSE: THE VERY BEST OF ANTHRAX chronicles the groups work from 1985 through 1991. The influential New York-based thrash metal band was one of the first rock outfits to experiment with rap (predating the whole "rap metal" craze of the late '90s by a decade). This is borne out by such tracks as "Bring the Noise," a Public Enemy cover featuring cameos by Chuck D and Flavor Flav. But Anthrax is best remembered as a true heavy metal band, and such standouts as "Madhouse," "Indians," "Belly of the Beast," and a metallic re-working of Joe Jackson's "Got the Time" prove it. Although the group would go on to issue more material throughout the '90s ...
