Contains an untitled hidden track following "A Good Man Is Hard To Find".
Like the simultaneously released ALICE, BLOOD MONEY features songs written for a Robert Wilson play. That's pretty much where the similarity ends; unlike ALICE's moody balladry, BLOOD MONEY is full of crazed, rhythmic pieces of sonic barbed-wire. The lyrics portray the main character of Wilson's WOYZECK, a man filled with madness and rage. The combination of junkyard percussion, near-psychotic vocals, and lounge-band-from-hell tones provides the perfect complement. The outlook is an unremittingly dark one, eventually bypassing existentialism ("God's Away on Business") in favor of outright misanthropy (the aptly titled "Misery is the River of the World"). The brief, Raymond Scott-like instrumental "Knife Chase" is a madcap interlude that brings the glory days of SWORDFISHTROMBONES to mind. Despite the gusto with which Waits throws himself into all this craziness, a couple of sadly romantic ballads provide a brief respite from the mayhem and make the rest of BLOOD MONEY feel all the more hard-hitting in contrast.
Blood Money uses the same template and players as Alice (released at the same time) and first saw life as an opera production by Robert Wilson. It's Waits's treatment of Georg Buchner's 1837 socio-political play, Woyzek which premiered in 2000 in Copenhagen. It's a dark morality play performed in a style where a barker from a medicine show is mysteriously transported to the Weimar Republic via Tin Pan Alley. Disturbing and delirious when it's not romantic and hilarious, the songs have a much more direct emotional appeal than the surrealistic Alice.

Tom Waits Blood Money Songs Blood Money Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) MASTERPIECE Another masterpiece done by Mr. Waits
Beautiful lyrics and beautiful melodies, if you're a newcomer or an old time fan, this cd is for you. Submitted by zitosilva (SĂŁo Paulo, SP, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
What an Intro! I had never consciously heard Tom Waits before (I had heard tracks from soundtracks but didn't register) and someone recommended this album for me. As the earlier reviewer said, it's a great way to get to know the music and I haven't looked back since. It's gritty, cynical and musically intriguing. At first it can grate, but given a fair chance, it soon grows and develops in stature. The man is a genius and I'm glad I found this album to teach me this. Tom does it again... Quirky, dark, and very emotional (not just the bad kind either). A must-have for any fan of his later work, i.e. Bone Machine, Mule Variations.
Never heard Tom Waits before? This is a great place to start. If you don't like this, try some of his early stuff; he has something for everybody. Submitted by a reviewer (Socorro, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
