Soy La Candela
$9.99 Personnel: Marc Anthony (vocals); Jennifer Lopez (vocals); Bernd Schoenhart (acoustic guitar); Luis Aquino (trumpet); Sergio George (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Alex Duque (bass instrument); Diego Galé (congas, bongos, bata); Robert Vilera (bata, timbales); Kevin Ricard (bata). If there's anything made clear by the growing number of albums by Latin artists that are conceived with mainstream English-speaking audiences in mind, it's that something essential gets lost in translation. There's no doubt that the reigning king of Nuyoriquen salsa, Marc Anthony, has the musical chops and vocal talent to churn out hits regardless of genre -- but it's also true that not all of his efforts merit the same consideration. In English, as on Mended in 2002, Anthony's lyrics sound schlocky and overwrought, sort of like Air Supply tunes -- early favorites of the young New Yorker -- turned up to 11. Or, sung in Spanish in mainstream romantic ballad style, as on Amar Sin Mentiras, they embody the suffering of a Latin lover trapped in a geek's body. You'd feel a little sorry for the guy if you didn't know that he was nonetheless managing ...

| | Misha Mengelberg Solo CD (2000) Import; Sacd Hybrid
Soy La Candela
$13.99 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Solo performer: Misha Mengelberg (piano). Recorded at Studio Leroy, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on December 8, 1999. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Listening to Misha Mengelberg play solo piano is like eavesdropping on a highly subversive mind at work. Everything is laid bare. Unlike Keith Jarrett, who endeavors to find a flow in solo-improvising, Mengelberg sets up expectations, then delights in sabotaging them. What starts out as a jaunty folk song of the sort one finds in a child's piano method book, "Koekoek" suddenly sprouts "wrong" notes, then collapses into crunching thumps. "Bill Evans in Dán begins, appropriately, with an oceanic pull but devolves into scary fits of isolation. Difficult, knotty, contradictory, ...

Soy La Candela
$13.15 I am a singer/ songwriter originally from the east coast. I was a singer/ front man in various local rock bands for many years. Around 1997 I got into songwriting and recording. I started on a 4-track where I wrote some really good stuff and realized I had a knack for songwriting and production. I was hooked! ADATs became the big thing. Soon I had a computer, software, a lot of outboard gear and a strong desire to make it as a solo artist. I submitted a few songs to various record companies and low and behold, Atlantic Records took an interest in one of my songs, âYouâd Be Amazed.â Unfortunately the deal fell through but I was convinced I had something to offer the great big music world! I went on to write and record about 135 songs. I currently have three CDâs: Slay The Dragon,â âPLANET X,â and âIt Must Be Paradise.â There is a fourth CD in the works tentatively called âCrushâ based on the title track, âIve Got A Crush On You.âI moved to Nashville, Tn about five years ago to pursue a songwriting career. I made some strong connections there and got some interest from Curb Records, Sony and an indy Christian label. I wasnât crazy about living in Nashville and Nashville wasnât crazy about me, (not being a âgood âol boyâ). I decided to get out of town, move south to Florida for white sand ...
| | Planet P Project Pink World CD (1985)
Soy La Candela
$15.19 Personnel: Tony Carey (vocals, various instruments, programming, computer); Reinhard Besser (guitar, sound effects); Robert Musenbichler (guitar); Eddie Taylor (saxophone); Roderich Gold (synthesizer); Fritz Matzka (drums, snare drum); Shane Dempsey (programming). Audio Mixer: Andy Lunn. Liner Note Author: Tony Carey. Recording information: Hotline Studios, Frankfurt, Germany. Illustrator: Stan Watts. Photographer: Larry DuPont. Arrangers: Peter Hauke; Tony Carey. Still a one-man show, Tony Carey, under the banner of Planet P Project, again teamed with producer Peter Hauke for this 1984 follow-up to the self-titled debut of the prior year. It's a sprawling, ambitious double album with a sketchy plot line revolving around Artimus, a boy who doesn't speak, and a Cold War-inspired Armageddon. Like it's predecessor, the music features a heavy emphasis on synthesizers, although there's also a good dose of guitar, giving it appeal to rock fans. Carey infuses Pink World with solid melodies, and there's plenty to enjoy on tracks like the surging title cut, the brooding "What I See," and the folk-tinged "A Boy Who Can't Talk." And, to his credit, despite the somewhat cumbersome premise, Carey manages to keep it all from getting too pretentious. Pink World is a curiously interesting ...
