Although both the band name and album title are pretty horrible, Strawberry Smell's debut album, Odorama, is a solid piece of psych pop that respects the traditions of the genre without being constrained by them. Although the requisite fuzzy/jangly guitars and Byrds-influenced harmonies are here in spades, the songs on Odorama are built on lead singer Cyril Jean's Farfisa organ and vintage Moog synthesizers. That blast of icy retro-futurism links Strawberry Smell both to '60s experimentalists like the United States of America or the Silver Apples and to later guardians of the analog synth sound like the band's fellow Frenchmen Tahiti 80 or Air. Unlike all of those bands, however, Jean and the other Smellers (guitarist and bassist Christophe and Olivier Valliant and drummer Cyrille Mazella) are primarily interested in pop hooks, not cool sounds. Like no psych pop revival album since Cotton Mather's 1998 gem Kon-Tiki, Odorama has melodies and (English language) lyrics that measure up to the clever arrangements and production. The perfect touches like the horns at the end of "Friends of Da Teenage" and the funky organ rave-up in the middle of the heavy-psych "Balthazar" would be much less impressive if the songs themselves weren't so instantly engaging. Unfortunately, some of these songs overstay their welcome by a minute or so each. Odorama is a great album, but with some judicious pruning it could have been a classic. ~ Stewart Mason

BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. Present's dark vision is alive and well (so to speak) on this live disk, and the vision is perhaps even more congenial to the modern audience than it was at the time of its inception back in 1981. Present's leader, electric guitarist Roger Trigaux, had also been a founding member of the slightly earlier and equally dark Univers Zero, and in the late '70s and early '80s, the music of these two Belgian groups was strong stuff indeed and strictly for cultists. Both utilized macabre, ghoulish imagery and combined King Crimson-ish, death-of-the-universe prog rock with dissonant, jagged themes that owed more than a little to 20th century classical composers such as Stravinsky and Bartók. But while Univers Zero cultivated a chamber rock aura, utilizing bassoon, oboe, and various strings on its recordings, Present has always been a guitar band, relying on slashing, dissonant electric guitar leads and a certain relentless repetition that distinguishes Trigaux's jabbing, insistent and sometimes borderline obsessive compositions. In 1996, after a long hiatus, Present emerged from obscurity with a lackluster live CD distinguished largely by the appearance of Roger Trigaux's son Reginald Trigaux on second guitar. At that point, they might have decided to stick to the studio, but two years later, after touring in the U.S. to support a new studio album, Certitudes, they played before a live audience at a small studio in Baltimore, MD, and made the dynamic live recording they weren't able to make two years earlier. The young Reginald had two additional years of experience, and the touring had obviously honed the band's sound to a keen edge. Three of the tracks on the earlier live 1996 CD are repeated on A Great Inhumane Adventure, including the monumental "Promenade au Fond d'un Canal," which was the featured piece on Triskaidekaphobie, Present's inaugural 1981 recording. The two guitars entwine exquisitely on the newer live version of the piece, and Pierre Chevalier assaults his keyboards with dissonant, propulsive energy throughout the program. Dave Kerman (of 5uu's, U Totem, and Thinking Plague) is a congenial force on drums, and he combines with bassists Jean-Pierre Mendes and (on "Promenade") Keith Macksoud for the thick, bottom-heavy sound associated with the classic French ...
