Guitarist Larry Coryell was one of the fathers of jazz-fusion--he presided over a shotgun wedding of electric jazz improvisation and rock dynamics. Since, he's played in a variety of styles and contexts, from funk to unaccompanied acoustic. After several albums of mainstream electric playing, Coryell gets back to the acoustic format here, this time in a group with his sons playing acoustic as well. (Moreover, this album re-unites him with powerhouse drummer Alphonse Mouzon, who played in his 11th House band in the '70s.) Coryell has a fiery, forceful approach to the acoustic guitar--imagine a cross between Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix. With subtle flamenco, folk, and blues influences in his playing, Coryell and sons (with Mouzon on percussion and Brian Torff on bass) present a superb set of chamber jazz. His son Murali sings on a few songs--accenting and paying tribute to the blues element in jazz--in a genial, raspy voice (not unlike Eric Clapton's). The playing of Brian Torff is round and sinuous, never fading into the background. THE CORYELLS is full of vigorous playing and sharp, concise group interplay.
Recorded at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, New York, New York from August 16-20, 1999. Includes liner notes by Larry Coryell & John Pizzarelli.
Personnel: Murali Coryell (vocals, guitar); Larry Coryell, Julian Coryell (guitar); Brian Torff (bass); Alphonse Mouzon (percussion).

Coryells album
$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that classic "ECM Records" aesthetic, comprising echo-laden sonic characteristics and a chamber-esque ...
| | Chick Corea Rendezvous In New York CDs (2003) SACD Hybrid
Coryells CD music
$20.39 This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
RENDEZVOUS IN NEW YORK was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "Matrix" won for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. "Armando's Rhumba" was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.
One of Chick Corea's most ambitious projects was the recording of almost 60 hours of music with nine different groups over a three-week run at the Blue Note in December 2001; it must have been a challenge to choose the dozen performances for this two-CD set. The first disc begins with scat singer par excellence Bobby McFerrin joining the pianist to scat his way through three selections, including a stunning medley of an excerpt from Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" and Corea's "Spain." Bassist Miroslav Vitous and ageless drummer Roy Haynes provide the pulse to his extended work "Matrix." Corea's well-crafted tribute to Bud Powell, with Terence Blanchard and Joshua Redman in the front line, combines two of Powell's greatest works, "Glass ...

| | Norah Jones Fall CD (2009)
Coryells songs
$14.44 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Coryells CD music
$12.95 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by ...

Coryells songs
$14.65 From the 1989 Festival of American Folklife series of concerts held by the Smithsonian comes this small collection of traditional Puerto Rican music as part of the Caribbean contingent attending the festival. The two bands featured on the album are Marcial Reyes y Sus Pleneros de Bayamon, which contributes a number of plenas and bombas, and los Cuerdas de Borinquen, who provide straightforward jibaro music, with the addition of an electric bass and a pair of bongos. Marcial Reyes is a displaced Puerto Rican hailing from New York, ...
| | Heptones Sea Of Love CD (1995)
Coryells album
$13.65 Sixteen tracks recorded under the direction of Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One, probably from the late '60s and early '70s. (The liner notes, as is par for the course on reggae reissues, seem to avoid even general estimates of the actual dates as if these were sensitive state secrets.) ...
