| | Klaatu/Hope CD - Import Klaatu Discography of CDs
This twofer brings together a pair of albums by Klaatu--the band's self-titled release and HOPE. "California Jam," "True Life Hero," and "Madman" are among the tracks.
Those who appreciate the smart pop, art/symphonic-rock, and weird sci-fi themes of Klaatu needn't venture beyond this two-on-one issue of their first two Capitol releases. Klaatu frequently alternated between Beatlesque pop, the showy guitar rock and vocal theatrics of early Queen, and the electronic orchestral techniques pioneered by Walter Carlos, or worked all three into the structure of a four- or five-minute song. They reached their creative peak on their second album Hope, which implemented all of the above in a very creative and effective manner but was predictably dismissed by the music press as being "over-indulgent" and "pretentious" -- and this only after it was ascertained that Klaatu was not the alias for the second coming of the Beatles. Their subsequent releases were downright ghastly pop-rock affairs that lacked originality and made their early-'80s demise a welcome occurrence. The Korean issue lacks liner notes and credit details, but for those who are curious about the Canadian band, this compilation presents Klaatu in their finest hour. ~ Dave Sleger

Drunkards, free spirits, wayward travelers, and lady-killers populate the songs of Kris Kristofferson, who was a wandering soul himself before becoming a professional musician. Always one to appeal to country and rock fans alike, Kristofferson is a songwriter's songwriter, as illustrated by this double-disc collection. The first ...

$15.55 While Varese Sarabande's The British Invasion Box certainly isn't a thoroughly comprehensive or complete overview of the mid-'60s boom of all things English in the world of rock & roll, it's certainly an entertainingly idiosyncratic examination of the period. Disc one, 25 Hits from the British Invasion, stretches that title more than a bit -- in no known universe was "I Knew It All the Time" by the Dave Clark Five really a hit, though since it predated their run of hits it was doubtless available to license unlike their best-known stuff, and similar legal issues make for a few other oddball inclusions. Since obtaining the rights for Beatles and Rolling Stones tracks would be either impossible or cripplingly expensive, compilers Cary E. Mansfield and Steve Massie ...

| | Felt Absolute Classic Masterpieces CD (1992) (Import)
Klaatu/Hope music CDs
$19.95 Absolute Classic Masterpieces documents the dark jangle pop of Felt between the years of 1979 and 1985; it's a best-of collection for a band that always deserved more attention. The tracks run in reverse chronological order, starting with "Primitive Painters," a song that charts the territory where the Cocteau Twins, the Fall, and the Smiths overlap, and ending with the very first demo single "Index." The order of the tracks means that you are listening to the band devolve into its influences, and the effect is enjoyable. "Primitive Painters" is a lost treat if ever one existed; along with the next three tracks, it was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. "Primitive Painters" also features Elizabeth Frazer of the Cocteau Twins on vocals. Guthrie is not the only famed producer whose work appears here; three John Leckie ...
| | Only Ones CD (1978)
Klaatu/Hope songs
$8.79 The eponymous 1978 debut from melodic punk act The Only Ones features ten tracks highlighted by "Another Girl, Another Planet."
The Only Ones were a band that became identified with the British punk scene largely because leader Peter Perrett had a funny voice and could write a great straightforward rock & roll song at a time when such virtues were possessed almost exclusively by the faster-and-louder brigade. This helps explain why the Only Ones' self-titled debut album is regarded as a classic of the first wave of U.K. punk despite the presence of the midtempo jazz-accented "Breaking Down"; the '50s pop moves of the opening cut, "The Whole of the Law"; "The Beast," which sounds like some sort of lethargic neo-boogie; and the graceful semi-acoustic semi-samba "No Peace for the Wicked." Of course, when the Only Ones felt like rocking out, they did it brilliantly, and along with the instant classic "Another Girl, Another Planet," this album includes the sinister but rollicking "City of Fun" and the feedback-drenched crunch of "The Immoral ...
