| | Band Collection CD - Import Band Discography of CDs
Although they were an innovative, fascinating, and highly influential recording outfit in the late '60s and early '70s, the Band were never a singles act and none of their songs ever made much of a dent in the pop charts. Furthermore, they also, at their best, crafted albums that had an uncommon coherence and purpose from track to track, so a sampler like this one, which pulls tracks from all over the place, weakens a little bit the powerful and perfectly realized singularity that was the Band in the first place. Oh, there are great pieces here, like the live "Don't Do It," the group's timeless version of "Long Black Veil," and Richard Manuel's late-era recasting of "Georgia on My Mind," but the best way to hear these tracks is still in their original settings on the original albums. ~ Steve Leggett
While The Band were creating music, they were also creating musical history as they blended elements of Country, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Folk, creating an influential sound that is now called Americana. When they split up towards the end of the '70s, their influence and legacy continued to grow. This 14 track compilation contains just a small, but significant, portion of their very important musical output. It is the perfect introduction into the world of Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Rick Danko. Features 'The Weight', 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down', 'King Harvest Has Surely Come' and many more. EMI Gold.

Collection CD music
$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever ...

| | Robert Gordon Lost Album, Plus CD (1998) (Import) Germany
Collection music CDs
$21.15 When Robert Gordon entered the recording studio in June 1980 to record what was to be his fifth album, it was make or break time with RCA. He emerged from the studio with 12 songs, but RCA wasn't happy with what they had heard, so they sent him back to work on more material. The material that he began working on that November eventually became his final RCA album, Are You Gonna Be The One, while only two songs from the June sessions were ever released. This fantastic Bear Family release compiles the other ten unreleased tracks from those sessions, and they are stunning. Leaving the rockabilly rebel in his back pocket, Gordon concentrates on pure pop and rock 'n' roll, never trying to be commercial or mainstream, yet sounding instantly accessible. His version of the Beatles' "Run ...

| | Deke Dickerson King Of The Whole Wide World CD (2008)
Collection CD music
$14.35 Deke Dickerson is one of America’s musical treasures. As an entertainer and musician, he has toured the world and established himself as one of the foremost purveyors of roots music, headlining festivals from Las Vegas to Finland. As a writer and music historian, he is well known for his regular column in Guitar Player magazine and recently authored two enormous essay projects for Bear Family’s 2007 Merle Haggard box sets. As an entrepreneur, Deke has partnered with Hallmark Guitars to produce the Deke Dickerson model guitar, as unique in its design as its namesake. As a behind-the-scenes mover and shaker, Deke has recorded songs that have been featured in a variety of movies, TV shows, and radio programs, from the Oscar-winning movie Sideways to HBO’s documentary Dirty Driving: Thundercars of Indiana and the hugely popular XM satellite radio show Theme Time Radio Hour with Bob Dylan. For this last, Deke not only contributed background guitar music but was also interviewed and quoted by Bob Dylan.Deke’s latest project is his new studio album, King of the Whole Wide World. Like his previous albums it’s a musical journey through the twisted roots of Americana, but this time the roots go deeper and further than ever before. He comments, “People love to label me rockabilly, but that’s just a small fraction of what I do. There are a couple of great rockabilly songs on the new album, but there are a lot of other styles as well, from bluegrass (“Boone County Blues”) to western swing (“Misshapen Hillbilly Gal”) to Memphis soul (“Make Way for a Better Man”) to doo-wop and rhythm and blues (“Itchin’ for My Baby”). The title track (“King of the Whole Wide World”) could even be called old-timey; it’s a tongue-in-cheek, autobiographical song about being a rich man without the constraints of money or fame. I decided the song sounded better with some 78 rpm record noise dubbed onto it. Call me sentimental, but I really think music like that sounds better with a little grit.”For the recording process, Deke enlisted the help of the many friends he’s made during his musical journeys. The core band consists of “Crazy” Joe Tritschler, the new guitar whiz-kid that has proved a fan favorite, as well as his old friends Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague on drums, Wally Hersom and Jimmy Sutton on bass, and Carl Sonny Leyland on the piano.Guest artists include the western swing band the Lucky Stars, who back up Deke on the politically incorrect (but very funny) “Misshapen Hillbilly Gal,” ...
