| | Shadow: Hard Sessions 2 CD
The second installment in the Shadow label's Hard Sessions series follows very much in the footsteps of the first, delivering a solid hour's worth of hard-step, dark-step, and jump-up drum'n'bass by top-notch artists at a budget price ($7.98 list). The program opens and closes with contributions from Hanna, pride of the Midwest, whose "Aftermath" is remixed by the British producer Decoder. In between his two tracks are previously unreleased pieces by Forensic (the dark and jittery "Demented Flows," which features fine rapping from MC Plague) and Carew Type-S (whose "Rabid" combines a hyperkinetic breakbeat with an old-school jungle bassline and quietly ominous chord washes), as well as a double handful of previously released gems from the likes of Icarus and Illform (the latter's "Hypnotic Poison" is presented in a remix by Technical Itch) and a very cool slice of hard-step from an upcoming album by Magnetic (aka James Hardway). Just the thing for those mornings when you need a little extra pick-me-up, or for those late nights when you really want to make your neighbors angry. ~ Rick Anderson

Shadow: Hard Sessions 2 album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark ...

Shadow: Hard Sessions 2 CD music
$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley. It's unsurprising to learn that Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt helped out by performing the harsh vocals on Katatonia's ...

$8.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track ...

Shadow: Hard Sessions 2 album
$15.85 The superlative repackaging and remastering undertaken by Ryko has put the original three-part, two-record set of this magnificent nonsense tale together for the first time. This is back to the madness of Freak Out, with more pop and doo-wop bursting through all the complicated stuff, letting you know that Zappa could write a hit single, if he could be bothered to do so. Joe's Garage is a hoot and harmlessly pornographic. The sleeve-note states that it is "a stupid story about how the government is trying to do away with music." It is absolutely ...
