| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Story Of Jazz film
$13.79 Personnel: Harry Connick, Jr. (vocals, piano); George Doering, Bryan Sutton (guitar); Geoff Burke, Ned Goold, Bill Liston (alto saxophone); Ernie Watts, Jerry Weldon, Branford Marsalis, Mike Karn (tenor saxophone); Greg Huckins (baritone saxophone); Dave Smith , Joe Magnarelli, John Eckert, Warren Luening, Wayne Bergeron, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Kadleck, John Fumo, Roger Ingram (trumpet); Jeff Bush, Andy Martin, Bill Reichenbach Jr. , Dion Tucker, Stephen Holtman (trombone); Joe Barati (bass trombone); Dan Higgins (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Vincent Caro . Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA; The Music Shed, New Orleans, LA. Photographer: Palma Kolansky. Arranger: Harry Connick, Jr. Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of ...

| | Lou Rawls Live! CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Story Of Jazz movie DVD
$8.85 Personnel: Lou Rawls (vocals); Tommy Strode (guitar); Herb Ellis (piano); Jimmy Bond (bass guitar); Earl Palmer (drums). Lou Rawls gives a riveting performance on Live!, covering standards from Basie/Rushing's tambourine-jumpin' "Goin' to Chicago" to T-Bone Walker's foot-stompin' "Stormy Monday," and whole lot in between. Each selection is as inviting as the next, featuring Tommy Short on piano solos on some. On finger-snappin' numbers like "In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down" and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," the crooning baritone wails his way through the lyric. The only single to chart from this live set was the moderately paced number "The Shadow of Your Smile," the theme from the movie The Sandpiper. But Rawls loses no steam; he romances the lyric with vehemence. It peaked at 33 on the Billboard R&B charts after only two weeks. (It was the first single to ever chart for Rawls.) For soul-stirrin' blues and swingin' jazz numbers, this is an excellent pick. ~ Craig Lytle Long before he became known as a smooth pop balladeer in ...
