| | Dalia Faitelson Point Of No Return CD Dalia Faitelson Discography of CDs
These brooding, original songs highlight the throaty, sensuous purr of Dalia Faitelson's singing voice, but her rhythm and lead guitar playing are also quite versatile and substantial throughout. Faitelson's talents extend even farther, in fact: she self-produced the record and wrote all the arrangements for her heavy-hitting band, comprised of Randy Brecker on trumpet, Chris Cheek on tenor, Lelo Nika on accordion, Thommy Anderson on bass, Adam Nussbaum on drums, and Ayi Solomon on percussion. Not unlike Basia Schechter and Pharaoh's Daughter, Faitelson's group filters a variety of ethnic elements through the prism of a signature sound, melding complex harmonies and rhythms with rock and pop undertones. "Birds, Planes & Flying Papers," the sole instrumental, picks up the tempo and brightens the mood, and the end of the program is particularly ripe with contrasts: first the angular jazz fusion of "The Informer," then the elegant interplay of acoustic guitar, soprano sax, and tabla drums on "Making Conversation." Nika cannot help but play a central role, whether he's contributing virtuosic solos or piquant accompaniments that lock in beautifully with the horns and percussion. ~ David R. Adler

Point Of No Return album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.

$12.39 Although emo is often thought of as a direct descendent of punk and alternative, the genre's tricky song structures oftentimes teeter toward prog territory. Case in point: Puzzle, the fourth full-length by Ayrshire, Scotland's favorite sons, Biffy Clyro. While the riffs and singalong choruses bear a resemblance to Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, it's no secret that the members of this trio obviously know the ins and outs of their ...
