The Dixie Hummingbirds have long been a staple in gospel music and the line-up represented on this compilation features some of the group's finest singers including the legendary crooner Ira Tucker. Culled from recordings spanning the years 1953 to 1975, 20th CENTURY MASTERS contains many classic Dixie Hummingbirds selections as well as several different styles of gospel music. For example, "Ezekiel Saw The Wheel" features the a cappella singing group style. The bass voice is emphasized on this track while the full quintet joins in on the song's refrain. "Christian's Automobile" is more overtly bluesy. Here, the group is accompanied by a funky rhythm section including guitarist Howard Carroll who plays with great emotion and sensitivity. The tried and true gospel standard "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See" receives a somber treatment here by Tucker and company. On this tune, the group brings to life the old-school church style of gospel as epitomized by Rev. James Cleveland. Paul Simon's "Loves Me Like a Rock" may be the compilation's highlight. For this selection, the group--which appeared on Simon's version--remains true to the original pop arrangement. All tracks have been digitally remastered.
