The String Quartet Tribute to Sarah Mclachlan features nine of the ethereal Canadian performer's songs, focusing on material from the 1993 breakthrough Fumbling Towards Ecstacy and its 1997 follow-up, Surfacing. The versions here are performed on violin, viola, cello, and bass, and do not feature vocals. The music lends itself relatively well to this format, though the songs do suffer a bit in the mood department without McLachlan's distinctive voice to guide them. "Sweet Surrender" is a standout, as is the sweeping "Full of Grace," which seems to be in slow motion, like sunflower petals floating in a breeze. The uncredited percussion on "Possession" is particularly effective. A misstep is an odd effect on "Ice" that's either a processed (and eerie) human voice or a mysterious instrumental effect. Either way, it's unsettling, falling as it does in the middle of an album made up entirely of romantic instrumentals. The collection also includes two pieces composed by the musicians performing here. While they're pleasant enough, it's odd to include material not attributed to McLachlan on a record dedicated specifically to her. ~ Johnny Loftus

String Quartet Tribute To Sarah Mclachlan CD music
$12.19 It's no secret that Sting is a serious man, so it's only logical that his holiday album -- his first new music since the Police reunion, not that it really matters -- is a serious endeavor, thank you. No niceties for him, no comforts of carols; he favors formal over familiar, writing madrigals, not ditties. It is music made by someone who lives in a castle, which isn't necessarily such a bad thing: the austerity is genuine, not affected, and the cerebral nature of the album is fascinating, albeit mildly so, as this is as sleepy as it is thoughtful. And it's that thoughtfulness that does distinguish ...

String Quartet Tribute To Sarah Mclachlan music CDs
$10.69 Lee Ritenour, a superior studio guitarist, has recorded very few jazz albums throughout his career, preferring to play melodic pop and light funk. On the rare occasions when he has had an urge to perform jazz, Ritenour has been more than happy to show off the influence of Wes Montgomery; therefore, this tribute is a logical move, even if the results are not all that exciting. Ritenour mostly plays pieces from the later (and more commercial) half of Montgomery's career, along with four of his own originals that are sort of in the tradition. He also hedges his bet a little by throwing in a Bob Marley reggae tune. For jazz listeners who wish to ...
