The Austin singer-songwriter reaches deep once again, adding triple violins, harp, and cello to his palette of movingly introspective material. Overall, the expanded lineup provides for plenty of tonal space. Before the mood ever gets maudlin, Escovedo cranks up the volume with guest guitarist Charlie Sexton for "Losing Your Touch," and a playful rocker that could have come from The Replacements/Paul Westerberg camp. With the exception of this track, "Mountain of Mud," and the John Cougar-ish "The End," Thirteen Years keeps to fragile, graceful interiors. ~ Roch Parisien

Includes liner notes by Jody Denberg.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Thirteen Years
CD $10.39  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
With his impassioned singing and honest songwriting, Alejandro Escovedo is one of the finest roots-rockers of the current era. On this 2001 release, he finds a sympathetic patron in Bloodshot Records, and outdoes himself with dramatic, spare arrangements and the occasional garage rave-up. Recorded at Modern Recording, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Personnel: Alejandro Escovedo (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chris Stamey (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, baritone guitar, Kurzwell synthesizer, sleigh bell); Mike Daly (acoustic guitar, electric 12-string guitar, mandolin); Joe Eddy Hines (electric guitar, slide guitar); Mitch Easter (electric guitar); Caitlin ...

Thirteen Years
CD $13.25  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
While Alejandro Escovedo had shown plenty of versatility over the first 15 years of his career in music -- playing with early punk ravers the Nuns, prescient alt-country upstarts Rank and File, and roots rock firebrands the True Believers, among many others -- it wasn't until the Believers took shape that he began to display his formidable gifts as a songwriter, and with his first solo album, Gravity, Escovedo belatedly made it clear that he possessed one of the strongest and most distinctive lyrical voices of his generation. Opening with "Paradise," a haunting first-person narrative of a man about to be hanged, Gravity is a strikingly accomplished set of songs that deal with love ("Broken Bottle," "Five Hearts Breaking"), death ("She Doesn't Live Here Anymore"), and loss ("The Last to Know," the title song) in deeply personal terms, and Escovedo tells his stories with a talent for finely woven detail that would be the envy of a first-rate novelist. And the diversity of Escovedo's years of musical experience shows in the album's arrangements, which range from quiet, contemplative pieces structured around cello and piano ("Broken Bottle," "She Doesn't Live Here Anymore") to full-on, amped-up barrelhouse ...

Alejandro Escovedo By The Hand Of The Father CD  (2002)

Thirteen Years
CD $12.59  4 stars Audio Samples
BY THE HAND OF THE FATHER features music from the theatre production of the same name. The depth and feeling of By the Hand of the Father is a bit shocking. The project began as a play that premiered in Los Angeles in 2000 and has been stripped down to a handful of songs accompanied by voice-over texts. These songs and voice-overs weave a complex tapestry that explores the Mexican-American experience in the 20th century. Individuals leave their homeland, search for the American Dream, and attempt to hold on to their heritage. Alejandro Escovedo, who has written most of the lyrics and sings most of the vocals, stands at the center of this multi-faceted venture. "Rosalie" tells the tale of two lovers separated by "An ocean of powder and dust," who finally marry after a seven-year courtship punctuated by only seven visits. At the beginning of "Mexico Americano," the narrator recalls how his father always felt more Mexican than American until he joined the U.S. Army to defend a country "that was barely even his." These songs move forward in time, from the early 1900s to World War II to the Vietnam War. Heavy drums and a galloping guitar punctuate "Hard Road," a series of vignettes about the working lives of Mexican-Americans. Like other Americans, they hope their sons and daughters will be able to do better than them. By the Hand of the Father is a contemplative work of rare depth. By attempting to find meaning in the lives and stories of those who have come before them, Escovedo and ...

Neil Young On The Beach CD  (1974) Remastered

Thirteen Years
CD $8.99  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain." The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD until 2003, ON THE BEACH is both unflinching and resilient, and easily stands as one of Young's finest albums. Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, Wurlitzer organ); Neil Young (Wurlitzer piano); Ben Keith (vocals, guitar, ...

Gram Parsons Complete Reprise Sessions CDs  (2006) Remastered; Boxed Set

Thirteen Years
CD $24.29  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. The latter is the best and most stirring recorded performance of Parsons's signature song and alone worth the box's sticker price. Other features scattered on the first two discs include radio interviews (with Parsons's southern hippie charm in overdrive); captivatingly raw acoustic performances with him, Harris, and drummer N.D. Smart; and an instrumental version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" that reveals just how ace a country band the Waycross longhair had. Audio ...

SO TONIGHT THAT I MIGHT SEE sticks close to the ground staked out by its predecessor, though with no less success. "Wasted" moves insistently down the twelve-bar road to nuanced, snarling guitar embellishments. "Blue Light" is smoky, blue-eyed (if black-hearted) soul. Of particular note is the cover ...

Jasmine Tropical Breeze CD  (1980) Import

Thirteen Years
CD $19.39  4 stars
When Tropical Breeze was recorded in New Orleans in 1980, Cassandra Wilson had yet to record as a solo artist or become a major name in jazz. But those who were hip to the singer back then knew that she had a lot of potential, and that included the other members of the Brazilian-oriented jazz-pop band Jasmine. In a perfect world, Wilson's brief stint as Jasmine's lead singer would have brought her commercial success. But Jasmine was obscure, and it wasn't until the '90s that Wilson finally received the type of attention that she deserved. It's safe to say that many of the singer's fans have never heard of Jasmine or Tropical Breeze, which was originally released on LP by Inner City and finally made its debut on CD when Japan's P-Vine label reissued it in 2002. But the album's obscurity doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Even in 1980, Wilson was striving for originality -- and on Tropical Breeze, she sounds like an interesting combination of Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, Joni Mitchell, and Nina Simone (among others). Wilson, who was 24 at the time, still had some growing and developing to do; even so, one hears a great deal of promise when Jasmine features her on gems by Brazilian heavyweights like Milton Nascimento ("Cravo e Canela," "Rio Vermelho") and Chico Buarque ("Partido Alto"). It should be noted that Wilson doesn't sing the original Portuguese lyrics on any of these songs; instead, she embraces rare English lyrics that were provided by Ron Cuccia. Wilson lays out on a few instrumentals ...
Deep Fried Fanclub
Teenage Fanclub Deep Fried Fanclub CD  (1995)

Thirteen Years
CD $12.65
Teenage Fanclub's Deep Fried Fanclub is a 1995 collection of songs recorded during the band's short stay at Paperhouse records in 1990. It also picks up their 1992 release on K. 1990 was an incredible year for the Fannies. They released two amazing singles, the guitar-hero glory of "Everything Flows" and the melodic juggernaut "God Knows It's True," and the promising debut album A Catholic Education. They also released a rollicking, loose cover of the Beatles' "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and a handful of B-sides that aren't exactly essential but are a lot of fun. Only "Weedbreak" is a complete throwaway. The demo version of A Catholic Education's "Primary Education" is a laugh, as the boys attempt to get funky at the end of the track will have you in a stitch or two. Their cover of Neil Young's "Don't Cry No Tears" is charmingly ragged and Gerry Love's "So Far Gone" is a powerful pop slice reminiscent of Hüsker Dü. The K single is a real kick. Their covers of Alex Chilton's "Free Again" and Beat Happening's "Bad Seed" are the sound of a band having a blast and there ain't nothin' wrong with that. Devoted Teenage Fanclub fans are likely ...
Beyond The Pale
Fiona Beyond The Pale CD  (1986) Reissued

Thirteen Years
CD $9.55  3 stars
The second album from this sweetly histrionic singer, featuring '80s pop, gated drums, and synthesizer stabs punctuated with '80s metal guitar. With Fiona out front and then-lover Beau Hill twiddling knobs, most every cut transcends the cookie cutter even in small ways, as when "Tragedy" mocks itself with electronic basso profundo backing vocals or "Hopelessly Love You" opens with a keyboard stammer and an intro twisting the fair maiden's pitches into helium giggles. Side two offers her first sustained suite, including "Running out of Night," a warning to an aging miscreant to either stay in bed or keep running; "He's on My Side" is the record's most pristine melody over heartfelt, embarrassed goop that's perfect ...
