This edition of THE JESTER RACE also includes the BLACK ASH INHERITANCE EP. In Flames: Anders Friden (vocals); Jesper Stromblad (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards); Bjorn Gelotte (guitar, drums); Glen Ljungstrom (guitar); Johan Larsson (bass, background vocals). Engineers: Frederick Nordstrom, Patrick Hellgren. Recorded in November 1995. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Oscar Dronjak (vocals); Kaspar Dahlqvist, Fredrik Nordström (keyboards). Recording information: Studio Fredman, Gothenburg, Sweden (11/1995). This special edition digipack combines In Flames' excellent sophomore effort, 1995's The Jester Race with the EP that served as a taster for the band's landmark follow-up of two years later, the career defining Black-Ash Inheritance. For those who missed either/or the first time around, this release offers greater incentive to discover this seminal Swedish heavy metal band. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Excellent A FANTASTIC album by In Flames, the kings of melodic death metal. Pure aggressiveness, mixed with beautiful harmonics and beautiful lyrics. Standout tracks include The Jester Race, Lord Hypnos, Moonshield and Wayfaerer Submitted by me (England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classic In Flames This album is simply amazing. The Jester Race is great by itself, but when you get Black Ash Inheiritance with it that makes it that much better. All songs are great and there is no skipping around to find a good song. This is right up there with Whoracle as the best In Flames album ever made. In Flames at their finest! In Flames never fails to impress me with each album they release (yeah I admit, 'Reroute to Remain' and 'Soundtrack to Your Escape' weren't bad either), and this album is simply one of their best. The first time I listened to this, it didn't click with me right away like 'Clayman' did, but after a few thorough listens it has quickly grown on me and become one of my favorite albums of all time. The only thing that may take some getting used to at first is Anders' growling voice, because personally I'm used to hearing him shout and scream on later albums, and he doesn't sing clean vocals on this album at all, for better or for worse. The music on 'Jester Race' is simply amazing! The guitar harmonies and double bass drumming blend perfectly together. The production on this album is by far the best I've heard from In Flames; it's not too loud or too muffled, but just right. Every song is incredible, including the instrumentals "Jester's Dance", "Wayfaerer" and the acoustic medley from the 'Black Ash Inheritance' EP that's included on here. I'd say my favorite song overall would have to be "Artifacts of the Black Rain". The live version of "Behind Space" sounds more like a demo than a live recording, not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not as good as '99 version from 'Colony'. Anyway, this album wasn't easy for me to find, so pick it up the first chance you get! Submitted by megadeth1981 (Lakeland, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The best album of In Flames The first time I listened to this cd, I didn't like it too much. But as other reviewers constantly say, it grows on you as you listen to it more and more. This was true for me, however, to this day, I still can't get into some of the songs, even though I see the great musicianship in this album. In conclusion, if you like swedish death that has an "older" guitar sound (unlike the crunch the guitars in the new albums by IF have), then you'll definitely want to get the Jester Race.
