This compilation from the far-reaching and authoritative ROUGH GUIDE series highlights the variation to be found in music for Raqs Sharqi, or Eastern Dance, the different types of which turn out to be as varied as the Eastern and Western cultures in which the tradition flourishes. The selections found here reflect the various forms and also the differing mood of this ancient dance, which has been an object of fascination in the West since international travelers first started journeying regularly to the East in the 19th century. All the tracks are traditional-sounding (no synths here); some incorporate oud and strings, while others feature only percussion or a combination of percussion and accordion. Fascinating and entertaining for dancers and listeners alike, ROUGH GUIDE TO BELLYDANCE is an eye-opening glimpse into a venerable yet eternally sensual form of expression.

| | Aoife Clancy Silvery Moon CD (2002)
Rough Guide To Bellydance songs
$12.29 Most performers get their start listening to records and catching bands at the local bar or stadium. Others, like the sons and daughters of performers, come by their musical heritage more naturally. One can't be terribly surprised when Aoife Clancy, the daughter of Bobby Clancy, joins Cherish the Ladies or releases a Celtic-influenced album like Silvery Moon. The album has a nice, crisp production, with acoustic guitars and pianos backing fiddles, mandolins, and Clancy's dynamic voice. The sound is carefully mixed, allowing the instruments to intermingle while still retaining the "plink" of each piano key on "Silvery Moon" and the deep bass of the cello on "Banks of the Sweet Primroses." Likewise, Clancy's vocals are always out front. There's a lovely a cappella take on "Across the Blue Mountains," with Julee Glaub and Aoife O'Donovan joining Clancy. The trio's version is one of those rare occasions when a timeworn piece receives a fresh treatment, leading the listener to hear the song with new ears. The last song is a surprise, with Bobby Clancy joining his daughter for "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine." This nod to the past on an album that mixes both tradition and contemporary sources ends Silvery Moon on the right note. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
With the release of "Silvery Moon" on Appleseed Recordings, singer Aoife Clancy, daughter of the recently deceased Bobby Clancy (a member of the Clancy Brothers for the last quarter century) resumes a solo career that was put on hiatus not long after the 1994 release of "It's About Time," her first of three solo albums to date. The following year, she was invited to become the lead vocalist for the New York-based Cherish the Ladies, one of the most sought-after Irish-American groups in Celtic history and possibly its only all-female band. In the last half of the '90s, Aoife (pronounced "Ee-fa") played hundreds of shows with them and sang on six albums, while also releasing a second solo record, ...

$22.79 PAMELA McPHERSON-CORNELIUSPamela is an experienced as well as a flavorful vocalist, who has been singing since the tender age of three. She was destined to be a musical sensation, not just because of her familyâs background, in music. Arthur Prysock her godfather, who was the instrument of her being. Pamelaâs father Arthurâs bass player-Lucky Romain met her mother Shirley McPherson. a singer with a local group while touring Army basses in the fiftyâs. Pamela is the product of that union. Pamelaâs uncle Donald McPherson, was the original lead singer of the legendary group âThe Main Ingredientâ. Pamela sings every where she goes, even if there is no music playing. Once during her many trips to the Apollo Theater, Al Green was appearing, and because she was always backstage, one of his staff heard her singing. Fortunately for her one of his background singers came down with a sore throat and at the age of seventeen Pamela got the change to sing background for him for the last three performances. Also after one of the shows at the Apollo, Pamela got the chance to speak with the legendary âQueen of Soulâ, Ms Aretha Franklin, Pamela still has the photograph.Singing as the soloist in the church has always been one of Pamelaâs passions. Singing with the âUnited Negro College Fund Choirâ on the stage at Carnegie Hall alongside of Tramine Hawkins was a great thrill but not as mush fun as singing duets with the legendary Cissy Huston on tour in Texas and Mexico.Pamelaâs many talents have taken her around the country and around the world. Pamela has played before the Governor of Barbados and the Ambassadors of Tobago and Morocco. As well as an entertainer for the Chandler Cruise Lines aboard the SS Britanis, traveling to and from Mexico.Pamela was one of the many entertainers who performed under tents at the â1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. She was invited back as one of the first Black performers to be televised on the Norwegian Grammy show in 1995, where the Storytellers, received a Grammy. She was a part of that recording ...
