Aimed at the older and reflective dance music market, the Hed Kandi label survived by explicitly stating its intentions upfront. And yet there was something missing from the package. Whether it was the uninspired choices (Julie McKnight, the Lab Rats, Indigo, Jamiroquai), the fact that nothing was mixed, or how the long stare toward Stardust diva disco gradually wore down listeners' energy, Hed Kandi: Disco Heaven was shamelessly middle of the road and projected a sort of artificial affinity for old, sleepily resurrected dancefloor ideas. Other than Full Intention's enchanting "Stars," this was safe, stale, and frustratingly reliable, the disco/house/dance compilation equivalent of post-Oasis garage rock. ~ Dean Carlson

If Hed Kandi's now ubiquitous club compilations leave any sort of lasting legacy, it will probably be the highly stylized deco-femmes that adorn the cover of each release. The music on these compilations, however, has often been limited to the whims of popular house music culture, which means that thoughtful programming is often overridden by big hit after big hit. In that sense, Hed Kandi: Disco Kandi 05.02 is not much different from any other Hed Kandi release, except to say that the past year had some cuts that were clever as well as catchy. Satisfying for house-heads while satiating the popular masses.
Disc One is the more light-hearted of the two. Dimitri from Paris and Mousse T give it a fresh old-school rap flava with their remix of T-Ski Valley's "Catch the Beat," while newcomers the Latin Hustlers look back even farther into the '70s with a freestyle carnival of horns and congas on "So Much Better At Bad." Disc Two is the more intense of the pair with Mousse T remixing both Shakedown's "At Night" and his own "Fire" into some serious late-night bass twisters. Three decades' worth of classic bachata cabaret music provides an instant education in the popular Dominican folk form for some, or a walk down memory lane for others. Bachata music flourished in the explosive era after the murder of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in the early 1960s. While still alive, Trujillo frowned upon bachata and other guitar-oriented sounds, as the music of the hoi polloi. After his death, a defiant populace played, recorded, and listened to bachata with a vengeance. The lyrics are often naughty, juxtaposed with a gentle, romantic guitar backing, and will appeal to anyone with a sense of humor and an ear for melody.
It happens time and time again: if a style of Latin music starts out rugged, raw, and rural, there is a very good chance that it will eventually be seriously commercialized and become a lot more polished. That has happened with everything from Colombian cumbia to Cuban son (a primary ingredient in what is now called salsa) to Brazilian samba, and Dominican bachata is no exception.
