Here's a very full and fine 70-minute collection of mid-'60s McDuff, recorded from 1963-1966 and taken from the Prestige albums Hallelujah Time!, The Midnight Sun, Recorded Live! In Concert Around the World, and I Got a Woman. Actually, it's almost like an expanded version of Recorded Live! In Concert Around the World, since seven of the 11 tracks come from that July 1964 recording. McDuff was leading an excellent group on these sides, with a young George Benson on guitar, Red Holloway on tenor sax, and Joe Dukes on drums (Pat Martino plays guitar on just one track, the sole offering from I Got a Woman). For the most part, the tunes have a frenetic organ jazz charge, perfect for getting you up and going without a coffee, the eight-minute "Undecided" being a special highlight in that respect. Occasionally they get mellower, as on the ballad "Midnight Sun" and a cover of "The Girl From Ipanema." The McDuff originals "Another Goodun'," "'Sokay," and "Spoonin'" (the last of which is the track with Martino) present the combo at its most down'n'bluesy, and Buddy Johnson's sultry "Save Your Love for Me" has some real unexpected high soul-doo wop harmonies at the tag. ~ Richie Unterberger

Concert Mcduff album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. | | Shirley Scott & The Soul Saxes CD (1969)
Concert Mcduff music CDs
$9.85 The idea of a soul-jazz album full of well-worn chestnuts like the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing," Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," and Goffin/King/Wexler's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" might seem a bit pedestrian at first. But once Hammond B-3 maestro Shirley Scott sets her instrument swirling with the deeply groovy assistance of her lockstep R&B backing band, the results are nearly irresistible. It doesn't hurt that Scott's band includes saxophonists King Curtis (tenor sax), Hank Crawford (alto and baritone), and David Newman (on tenor and flute), who provide fat, brash punctuation and some fine solos throughout.
A crack rhythm section ...

Concert Mcduff album
$14.59 Twin-guitar leads and melodic vocal lines in the classic mold of the new wave of British heavy metal abound on Steel Prophet's Dark Hallucinations, the band's fourth album overall and the first issued in America. Several songs here were inspired by Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451. ~ Steve Huey
Steel Prophet is one of the few bands who didn't give up on their way to success and patiently trained to improve their skills with each next release. 'Dark Hallucinations' is one of their finest works to date, showing the band at the peak of their musical skills. With this album Steel Prophet ultimately proved that their place is among power metal legends such as Iron ...
