Soranoue album
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Soranoue music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart of the listener with his pure, emotive tone.

| | Fireworks All I Have To Offer Is My Own CD (2009)
Soranoue CD music
$12.19 The late '90s and early to mid-2000s brought listeners such a glut of mediocre, pedestrian emo/punk-pop bands that there was an inevitable backlash against emo -- especially if the lyrics were introspective in an ultra-whiny way. But there is always room for a good punk-pop band that has some understanding of what goes into effective power pop, and Fireworks' All I Have to Offer Is My Own Confusion indicates that the members of this Detroit-based band get it. Punk, of course, has been making itself relevant to power pop ever since the Dickies, Generation X, the Buzzcocks, and the Ramones back in the late '70s -- and the more substantial punk-pop bands that emerged in the 1990s and 2000s also knew how to balance punk and power pop considerations. Gratefully, Fireworks achieve that balance on this 2008 recording, which successfully blends punk's in-your-face outlook with melodic pop instincts and avoids the excessive whining that has plagued so many emo recordings. All I Have to Offer Is My Own Confusion has vulnerability, but it isn't whiny. And even though tracks like "Detroit," "2923 Monroe Street," and "You've Lost Your Charm" aren't groundbreaking or terribly distinctive, they're definitely respectable. Fireworks know how to rock passionately and be very poppy at the same time, which is what power pop is all ...
