| | Dark Awakening, Vol. 2 CD
Compiled by DJ Dirk Neveling, the second volume of Dark Awakening is a collection of 28 goth and darkwave tracks spread across two discs, with inclusions from the Mission ("Slave [To Lust]"), Clan of Xymox ("I Want You Now"), Diary of Dreams ("Butterfly: Dance"), the Convent ("First Impression of the West"), Brother Orchid ("Season of the Witch"), and Diva Destruction ("The Broken Ones"). Most of these songs are just as melodic as they are dark, spiked with all the usual characteristics that color the style being documented. Though hardly definitive, it documents the movement during the late '90s and early 2000s better than most. ~ Andy Kellman

Dark Awakening, Vol. 2
$17.95 If it was a reaction to California's eternal sunshine and plastic sheen that inspired Metallica and Megadeth to help create the dark, angst-filled extreme metal that became thrash, perhaps it was New York City's inherent toughness that caused Anthrax to inject a quirky worldview and sarcastic sense of humor into its own pioneering speed metal. Like NYC proto-punks the Dictators before them, Anthrax's uncompromising individuality may have cost them the kind of mainstream success later achieved by their contemporaries and followers, but it also endeared them to an unusually loyal hardcore fanbase. This loyalty extended across the Atlantic to England, as evidenced by the rapturous audience reception documented on CAUGHT IN A MOSH: BBC LIVE IN CONCERT, which features two British gigs from Anthrax's 1987 heyday. Both the Hammerstein and Donnington festival shows find the band in peak form, whipping the crowds into a frenzy with its high-energy chugga-chuggery and vocalist Joey Belladonna's Bruce Dickinson-like tenor. On classics such as the pounding, hardcore-influenced "I Am the Law" and the genre-defining political song ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Dark Awakening, Vol. 2
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to ...

Dark Awakening, Vol. 2
$12.65 Recorded between 1974 & 1980. Includes liner notes by David Katz.
Compiled by a team of four including Niney the Observer and Dillinger himself, Ultimate Collection pulls from the DJs fruitful mid- to late-'70s period. Toasting over dubs and re-cuts of established rhythms, Dillinger's strength was his effortless and compelling delivery. At times a smart-alack slacker, others a mindful reporter, and often both, Dillinger is a great place to start for anyone interested in the DJ style. Its hard not to get hooked since he seems to be enjoying himself as much as the listener, hooting and hollering for emphasis, or on "I Thirst, Pt. 2," breaking into a Cookie Monster impression. The biggest hit, "Cokane in My Brain," returns to its original misspelling, and the liner notes by author David Katz help out ...
