Isaac Brock Of Modest Mouse Solo Project
Ugly Casanova: Isaac Brock (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel includes: Brian Deck, John Orth, Tim Rutili, Pall Jenkins. Recorded at Glacial Pace Studios, Oregon. Personnel: Tim Rutili (vocals, guitar, slide guitar, fiddle, keyboards); Pall A. Jenkins (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Orth (vocals); Brian Deck (mandolin, organ, keyboards, drums, percussion, sound effects, background vocals). Recording information: Glacial Pace Studios, OR (2001); Pall's (2001). Illustrator: Thomas Campbell. The story behind Sharpen Your Teeth is odd yet plausible: a mentally unstable character named Edgar Graham (calling himself Ugly Casanova) met up with Modest Mouse, followed them around on tour, recorded some songs, gave the recordings to labels, and then mysteriously disappeared. Songs on tapes discovered by Sub Pop were later recorded by Issac Brock of Modest Mouse in hopes that Graham would resurface. The first solo record from the singer/guitarist, Sharpen Your Teeth, cuts into raw indie rock with spells of country and folk, while allowing Brock to explore a varying scope of sounds. He gets help from Brian Deck (whose production credits include Tortoise and the Sea and Cake), Tim Rutili of Red Red Meat, and Pall Jenkins of the Black Heart Procession. Ranging from heartfelt acoustic numbers ("Cat Faces") to outright bizarreness with grating vocals ("Diamonds on the Face of Evil"), there's no doubt that the mood sometimes coincides with the enigmatic Graham. ~ Kenyon Hopkin

Perhaps the stars were right, or perhaps his American company, flush from the unexpected success of Murphy's former bandmates in Love and Rockets, just decided to give Murphy a well-deserved publicity push. Whatever it was, with Deep Murphy scored an honest to goodness American radio/MTV hit thanks to the tender, lively "Cuts You Up," a love song with solid energy and an inspired vocal. It was a perfect calling card for the album as a whole, with Murphy in excelsis throughout and his Hundred Men providing everything from the lush, ...

$9.89 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Peter Hayes, Robert Levon Been, Nick Jago. Personnel: Ryan Cobb (electric guitar); Michael Been (piano); Paul Cobb (drums). Since the release of Take Them On, On Your Own in 2003, things were tumultuous for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. They were unceremoniously dropped by Virgin in a cloud of bad feeling. In fact, their first record for RCA, 2005's Howl, sounds like the work of an entirely different group. Gone are the insistent tempos, the snarling vocals, and the sheets of guitar noise. Gone ...
