This 4CD box-set features the best sides by this, now largely forgotten, big-toned tenor master during his hey-days in the forties. 87 tracks including the legendary Pasadena concert from 1949, and a 40 page illustrated booklet with Ventura's full story and session details.
Recorded in part in Pasadena, California in 1949.
Contains 87 tracks. Bop For The People Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Charlie Ventura Boxed Set The only way to hear the complete 1949 pasadena concert that was the west coast birth of cool jazz simultaneous with parker, diz and miles out east. Excellent be-bop This CD has some of the best bop, vocalized by Jackie and Roy, of the Ventura era. One track was poor quality, as if recorded from an old scratchy 78, but the rest is superb. Submitted by raypani (Jacksonville, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Reissue of the year This four disc compilation of Charlie Ventura's various bands gets my vote for the album of the year. Not only does each disc average 77 minutes but the accompanying 40 page booklet is a great assett. The sound is excellent. This package should appeal to all tenor sax, Jackie & Roy and Bennie Green fans. The legendary Pasadena Concert is released in it's entirety for the first time and is worth the price, by itself. A great value! Submitted by a reviewer (Scottsdale, Az) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Bop/Swing If you aren't familier with Ventura this is a good place to start. Excellent coverage of his career. The music is top notch and goes from swing to bop and features all the greats. The real kicker is that all this great music - 4 cds worth - costs no more than a single CD. Remastering is excellent as always with Proper. Another great , cheap box set from Proper 80 plus tracks, under 20 bucks! It has the famous Pasadena concert from 1949, with Condoli, Jackie and Roy , and of course the wonderful Charlie Ventura(why has he been so completely forgotten?) 40 page booklet as mentioned, very good sound quality and it comes in a sturdy hard cardboard box, wonder if this company(proper) is just completely in love with jazz, or is it some sort of tax writeoff? :) Submitted by a reviewer (atlanta, ga) Was This Review Helpful? True to its title, THE LIONEL HAMPTON STORY box set covers the full career of one of jazz's most important pioneers. As a sideman, leader, drummer, pianist, vocalist, and vibraphonist, Hampton played with exuberant skill and enthusiasm throughout an astounding chunk of the 20th century (from the 1920s through the late 1990s), making music with everyone from Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman to Art Tatum and Charles Mingus.
Hampton was the first to improvise extensively on the vibraphone, and it was on this instrument that he made his most significant contributions to the form. There is plenty of evidence of his dynamic mallet style and unerring sense of swing across the 92 recordings on this four-disc set, which features all of Hamp's best-known tunes (such as "Flying Home" and "Hamp's Boogie Woogie"), and a veritable who's who of jazz musicians on the personnel list. A lengthy deluxe booklet full of discography info and rare ...

Bop For The People songs
$30.39 THE WOODY HERMAN STORY contains tracks recorded from 1939 to 1949.
The Woody Herman Story showcases the multi-talented bandleader fronting his First and Second Herds on recordings made for Decca, Coral, Brunswick, Columbia and Capitol. Like the majority of Proper box sets, these four CDs are broken up into themes: "Woodchoppers Ball" covers 1939-1944, "The Good Earth," 1944-1945, "Blowin' Up a Storm," 1945-1947 and "Four Brothers," 1947-1949. Not only does this set thoroughly examine Herman's modern big-band charts, but the 92 tracks are chock-full of guest appearances by such jazz stalwarts as Stan Getz, Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Giuffre, ...

$11.59 The Vibrations first recorded as the Jayhawks in 1956 and hit anonymously with "Peanut Butter" as the Marathons on Argo Records in 1959; so 20 songs may seem like a lot, but is hardly definitive of an 18 year recording career. Still, it's ...
