(3 Customer Reviews)
Incl. "All For Love" W/Sting & Rod Stewart
Personnel includes: Bryan Adams, Mel C., Sting, Rod Stewart, Paco De Lucia. Producers include: BA, Pat Leonard, Bob Rock, Bob Clearmountain, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. While ANTHOLOGY provides a comprehensive overview of Bryan Adams's career and SO FAR SO GOOD anthologizes his early hits, THE BEST OF ME shows the Canadian pop-rocker's staying power by focusing on his finest work from the '90s onward. There are a couple of older tracks (rockers "Summer of '69" and "Run to You") thrown in for good measure, but the spotlight here is on Adams the balladeer, belting out lighter-waving, larger-than-life tunes like "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You." The new material here is added incentive for hardcore fans. The Best of Me acts as a kind of companion piece to So Far So Good, collecting Bryan Adams' biggest hits from the '90s, some new tracks, and some of his classic singles. Along with staples such as "Summer of '69" and "Run to You," the compilation spans power ballads like "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You," "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?," and "Let's Make a Night to Remember," as well as more upbeat tracks like "The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me Is You" and "Can't Stop This Thing We Started." Unlike So Far So Good, however, The Best of Me doesn't quite balance Adams the balladeer and Adams the rocker; too much of The Best of Me focuses on less than stellar duets and the sappiest side of his work. Overall, The Best of Me is an adequate look at Adams' later work, but as a greatest-hits collection, it's lacking. ~ Heather Phares This rather bizarre Japanese collection was culled from Bryan Adams' recordings for A&M from his first couple of albums, and doesn't include anything from 1983's Cuts Like a Knife. What? Right, it doesn't include that track or "This Time," to name a couple. Technically, it sounds great, but -- simply put -- this is far from the best of a songwriter who made his mark with the aforementioned album. For those interested in Adams' work, or for the nostalgically curious, the 2005 release Anthology -- which comes with a DVD of his videos and live performances -- is a far better buy, since any CD coming from Japan is going to cost a mint anyway. ~ Thom Jurek

| | England Dan Nights Are Forever CD (1976)
Best Of Me
$9.69 Nights Are Forever was the breakthrough album for Dan Seals and John Coley after some sincere and excellent work on A&M Records in the early '70s. Two of their biggest hits were the title track and the beautiful "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight." Those songs are a good indication of the fine performances this 1976 album contains. The duo's originals like "Long Way Home" and the Dan Fogelberg-ish "Westward Wind" could have been hits as well displaying superb musicianship and delicate vocals. This album is very much a companion piece to the Parker McGee album recorded around the same time, on the same label, with pretty much the same musicians. Producer Kyle Lehning has the sounds so similar a survey ...

| | Cypress Hill Till Death Do Us Part CD (2004)

Cypress Hill: B-Real, DJ Muggs, Sen Dog (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Tego Calderon, Damian Marley, Prodigy, Twin, Tim Armstrong. Producers: Muggs, The Alchemist, Tony "CD" Kelly, Fredwreck Nassar. Personnel: Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Traci Nelson, Chace Infinite (vocals); Fred Wreck (guitar, keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Rob Hill (guitar, keyboards, programming); Mike Sims (guitar, keyboards); Rogelio Lozano (guitar, programming); Reggie Stewart (guitar); Tim Burton (saxophone); Dan Boer (keyboards); Al Pahanish, Scott Abels (drums); Ray Ramundo (congas); Muggs (programming). Audio Mixers: Muggs; Rob Hill; Fred Wreck. Recording information: Fred's Crib. Photographer: Estavan Oriol. B Real: "Throw it on the wall/See if it sticks/If it don't work/Take another hit." Sen Dog: "Take another hit!" Those are not quotes. However, if Cypress Hill were to take the lead from every other MC who has declared honesty to be the only policy, the group might've included lines like that somewhere near the beginning of their eighth album. More restless than ever, fleeting flirtations with Jamaican music of most stripes -- dancehall, dub, and ska included -- are handled clumsily. The results are as mixed as the approaches. The most problematic moment of all is the missed opportunity that is "What's Your Number?," where Rancid's Tim Armstrong is drafted in to help replicate the dubby lope of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton"; though it would've been more fitting to hear B Real spit another grimy rhyme in this setting, he chooses instead to spin a tale of picking up a woman. The highlights all take place when the group sticks to what it does best, though the pro-weed moments keep on getting increasingly dire. The Alchemist-produced and Tego Calderón-assisted "Latin Thugs" is one example of the group retaining its strengths, since it's full of fire and swagger. All points aside, the album is strictly for the devout fan base. ~ Andy Kellman Till Death Do Us Part sees Cypress Hill more restless than ever, flirting with Jamaican music of most stripes -- dancehall, dub, and ska included. | | Billy Joel Piano Man-Very Best Of CD (2005) (Import) England; Thailand
Best Of Me
$19.69 2004 single disc collection that documents the Piano Man's long career from the 1970's to the early nils. 19 great classics in all.
This international collection of highlights from the East Coast native's prolific career takes its choicest bits from Columbia's three hugely successful Greatest Hits compilations. Piano Man: The Very Best of Billy Joel may just skim the surface of Joel's large reservoir of material, but it's hard to argue with the end results. All of the radio hits, minus some of the more obscure ones like "Allentown," "Pressure" and "Matter of Trust," are dutifully represented. From "River of Dreams" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" to "Piano Man" and "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," this skillfully paced compilation, which also includes a ten-track DVD, is about as good a single-disc Billy Joel primer as one is likely to find. ~ James Christopher Monger Embittered by legal disputes with his label and an endless tour to support a debut that was dead in the water, Billy Joel hunkered down in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles, spending six months as a lounge singer at a club. He didn't abandon his dreams -- he continued to write songs, including "Piano Man," a fictionalized account of his weeks as a lounge singer. Through a combination of touring and constant hustling, he landed a contract with Columbia and recorded his second album in 1973. ...
