Johnson, Blue Bull, Night Riders, Birmingham Junior, Bobby Long, Randy Hobbs,
As the title says, this is a blues party, a midnight-to-dawn shebang with plenty of liquor, sandwiches, chicken, beer, and cigarette smoke clouding the room. Blue Bull's opening "I'm a Loser" sets the stage for a wild CD ride that will light up backyard barbecues given by the geritol set and blues lovers of all ages. The best performances are too numerous to list. These tracks will make even the musically dead rock their shoulders like robots. You may need to take a break after listening to about five of these ruthless juke joints in a row, as there is no letup from track one to track 27; even the slow-rollers are sobering and could double as wake-up calls. Few big names but plenty of big sounds. As essential as water for jump blues lovers. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Midnite Blues Party
$14.09 This is the true roots of Davell Crawford, and they do shine with the promise of even better things to come. This disc is based in the gospel sound he grew up with. It is the gospel experience with all the best that the blues and rhythm and blues added to it, as this sound of celebration and joy spread from "the word" to include the secular world. He comes from that hot bed of keyboard players and this 'type' of music, New Orleans. Whether he wishes it or not he is going to be compared to those icons of the city that came before him and set standards, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and Dr. John, and Henry Butler to name but a few of his more recent predecessors. Try and remember that this talent is only 24 years old, and he is just beginning to show us what he is capable of doing. There is not a weak cut on this disc, which includes ...
| | Josh White Empty Bed Blues CD (2003)
Midnite Blues Party
$11.19 Empty Bed Blues was Josh White's farewell recording for Elektra, the record label that helped (re)introduce him to the mainstream during the height of the '60s folk revival. To look at the sexy -- and risqué for 1962 -- cover, one would think that half of the tunes, stately renditions of gospel songs, wouldn't be at home on the album. But considering that the ribald, innuendo-laden first side is belied by White's ...
