Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated Follower of Fashion"). By the time the album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society was released in 1968, Davies had become a master of elegiac studies in English suburbia. The gender-bending "Lola" was a big hit in 1970 and the Kinks entered the video era in 1983 with "Come Dancing" and its memorable video. The Ultimate Collection spans the group's career in two discs, including the hits, B-sides, and key album tracks. ~ Steve Leggett
Arguably the finest and most expansive Kinks collection on the market! The first disc of this double-disc begins with their third single and first No. 1, the insistent 'You Really Got Me', then races through the glory years with the absurdly infectious likes of 'Sunny Afternoon', 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Lola' and 'Apeman'. Dave's two hits are included, too, and the disc ends with 'Come Dancing' and other selections from The Kinks' early-80s comeback. Disc Two includes songs that were hits for others ('David Watts' and 'Stop Your Sobbing'), various B-sides and other rarities, including 'God's Children', from the soundtrack of Percy, a movie about a fellow seeking the original owner of his recently transplanted penis. The Ultimate Collection is an excellent addition to the Kinks's cannon. 44 tracks in all spread over two discs. Kinks Ultimate Collection Songs Ultimate Collection Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Needs more tracks from the 80s While it is only missing one hit from the 60s and 70s ("Destroyer"), this collection is light on the 80s hits. The handful that are here certainly are the strongest, but it would've been nice if they had included the following tracks: "State Of Confusion", "Rock & Roll Cities", "Working At The Factory", "Lost And Found", "The Road", "Catch Me Now, I'm Falling", and "Father Christmas". Definitely the Ultimate Collection This is definitely the Kinks collection to get. It's the most comprehensive collection yet, with all of their early and later hits, including You Really Got Me, All Day And All Of The Night, Tired Of Waiting, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset (in stereo), Days, Stop Your Sobbing (in stereo), A Well Respected Man, Come Dancing, Better Things, Celluloid Heroes, and much more (a total of 44 songs). And the songs have never sounded better, especially the remastered selections from the 60s (including Lola in stereo). My only regret is that they left off Catch Me Now I'm Falling. Even so, this is the best collection out there. You won't regret buying it. Submitted by a reviewer (Maple Glen, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Ultimate Collection
$9.29 The Pogues: James Fearnley, Jem Finer, Andrew Ranken, Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, Cait O'Riordan. RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH delivers on the brash promise of its predecessor, RED ROSES FOR ME, mixing the band's unique brand of traditional Irish instrumentation and composition with Shane MacGowan's timeless poetry. As the mythic introduction of the album's opener, "The Sickbed Of Cuchulainn" crashes into its heaving, breakneck-speed verse, RUM, SODOMY & THE LASH is a hurtling juggernaut of Celtic soul, fierce and unrelenting. Its lyrics are the very stuff of Irish song and story: cruelty, human suffering, poverty-- and more than a few whiskeys along the way. Produced by none other than Elvis Costello (who here met his future wife, bassist Cait O'Riordan), this album boasts a feel that is close-up enough to be intimidating. Though on slower numbers such as O'Riordan's enchanting take on the traditional "I'm A Man You don't Meet Every Day," this closeness perfectly captures the vulnerability of both song and singer. With lyrical references to drug addiction, vagrancy and prostitution ...
| | Cobra Starship While The City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets CD (2006)
Ultimate Collection
$10.05 Cobra Starship: Ryland Blackinton (guitar); Elisa Schwartz (guitar synthesizer); Alex Suarez (electric bass); Nate Navarro (drums). Additional personnel: Maja Ivarsson (vocals); Joe Trohman, Nick Wheeler (guitar). Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta first grabbed the world's attention with his catchy, tongue-in-cheek movie theme song, "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)" (and its attendant video's all-indie-star cast), and then enjoyed some notice for his Gwen Stefani pastiche "Hollaback Boy." Here, he enlists the Ivy League's guitarist Ryland Blackinton and bassist Alex Suarez for a full-length album of exuberant and clever pop-punk built on brash guitars, funny hipster-skewering lyrics, and a confident vocal swagger that both apes and mocks emo conventions. While snark-infested tunes like "Pop-Punk is Sooooo 2005" and "The Kids are all F*cked Up" are clearly meant to be goofy, "The Ballad of Big Poppa and Diamond Girl," with its appealing electro-pop feel and a stirring melody, indicates a serious songwriting talent underneath the blankets of irony. Having been introduced to Cobra Starship (aka Midtown vocalist/bassist Gabe Saporta) through the ridiculously catchy "Bring It (Snakes on a Plane)" from summer 2006's horror-comedy Snakes on a Planes, who could blame one for thinking the band something of a joke? The dance-pop song was almost the perfect balance of unabashed fun, absurdity, and catchiness, but it still seemed like a one-off novelty, not to mention a total shock to those familiar with Saporta through his work with Midtown. What could an entire full-length from Cobra Starship actually sound like? Lucky for everyone, Saporta was smart enough to realize these doubts going in, evidenced by the opening track on While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets, which asks, ...
