Led by percussionist and genre-smasher Doug Sharin, HiM is part of Chicago's post-rock scene and one of several bands to blend jazz, electronica, post-punk, world flavors, and the ideas of 20th century minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley. HiM also throws in a healthy dose of dub, keeping their experimental tendencies grounded by groove.
EGG is HiM's 1996 debut and, while not the band's best, it is a fair representation of the group's fusion-oriented approach. Polyrhythms percolate, guitars swell with distortion-enhanced dreaminess, bass lines burble, and the whole strikes a pleasing see-saw between cerebral and funky. Fans of Tortoise, Isotope 217, and certain strains of IDM (Mouse on Mars, for example) should check this out.

| | Ultra Chilled 01 CDs (2001)
Egg
$15.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ David Waxman.
Despite the rather unfortunate title, Ultra Chilled, Vol. 1 assembles some of the most established names in down-tempo electronica and trip-hop, mixing them with some relative unknowns. The flow from Dido to Gorillaz to St. Germain to Morcheeba is deceptively smooth, as is what will be most listeners' introductions to acts like Zero 7 and Goldfrapp, with each song seamlessly blending into one another. The sequencing on the two-disc set is a little predictable, with many of the better-known artists grouped near the front of each disc, but little glimmers of familiarity (like Alex Gopher's "The Child" ...
| | H I M Our Point Of Departure CD (2000)
Egg
$12.19 Our Point of Departure, HIM's fourth full-length release, takes a departure from their previous effort, Sworn Eyes. Here, leader Doug Scharin (drums, mixing) is surrounded by Carlo Cennamo (sax), Fred Erskine (bass, trumpet), Sean Meadows (guitar), and Jon Theodore (percussion). Exit the loops and the hip-hop grooves: The music on Our Point of Departure sounds almost completely non-manipulated (except for "Persistent Life"). Tracks are a lot shorter, the longest being under eight minutes ...

Egg
$16.59 The blueprint for Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2 is the same as the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). ~ John Bush
Fans eager for a successor to the solid first edition in Ultra's downbeat series -- which rose above the heap of substandard, commercialized chill-out compilations -- will likely be disappointed by Ultra Chilled, Vol. 2. The blueprint is the same, with compilers balancing a few downtempo tracks by a varying cast of vocal artists (Coldplay, the Specials, Black Box Recorder, Nelly Furtado, Bebel Gilberto, Radiohead) with electronica specialists (here, usual suspects like Boards of Canada, Groove Armada, Thievery Corporation, Tosca, Fila Brazillia, and Röyksopp). | | H I M Razorblade Romance CD (2000)
Egg
$11.65 Despite having releases available mostly on import, the Finnish metal band HIM has inspired an incredibly loyal cult following in the United States. In late 2003, Universal reissued this, the group's sophomore album from 2000 (which reportedly sold over a million copies in Europe), with two remixed tracks from HIM's debut and one new song. Combining elements of vintage glam, old-school goth, and classic rock, with a few modern touches sprinkled in, the ensemble provides potent accompaniment to frontman Ville Valo's tortured singing.
HIM's dynamic music is based on an infectious blend of metallic riffs and goth keyboards. Mixing hard rock anthems with softer ballads, the band allows Valo to wax poetic (almost psychotic) about tragic love ("Join Me in Death"), romantic fatalism ("I Love You [Prelude to Tragedy]"), and monstrous obsession ("Right Here in My Arms"). While HIM's ...

| | Fugazi Red Medicine CD (1995)
Egg
$9.99 Fugazi are as notable for their "political music for the common man" approach as for the stop-start riffing that made their guitars-and-gestalt-therapy sound into an industry buzz. Their 1995 album, RED MEDICINE, reasserts the band's grasp on alterna-angst and charging guitars--enough so to make your jaws lock.
Yet, RED MEDICINE isn't just another exercise in Fugazi-style ...

| | Marriage 2 CD (2009)
Egg
$12.69 Local band Marriage packaged its 2005 release squeezed between two pieces of rugged plywood fasted by a nut and bolt. Three years later, II comes sewn into a quilted envelope. Side by side, it's easy to think of the two records as complimentary husband and wife incarnations of the same band. The softer presentation this time around is a fitting representation of Marriage's new direction. Gone are the discordant sludge metal assaults of the previous release. II is decisively more melodic, although Josh Wootton's vocals remain heavy, fierce and coarse. This time his dark almost Tom Waits-like growl is backed by antique piano notes and delicate acoustic guitars. On the track "The Deceitful Heart," he even ventures briefly into falsetto range.Still, there is something enticingly uneasy about this record. There is a constant tension between Brent Blalock's serene rhythms and Wootton's harsh howl, like a domesticated ...
