Best Part CD
J-Live
Audio Mixer: Scott Harding. Recording information: D&D Studios; Fast Forward Studios, New York, NY; The Cutting Room; Unique. Photographers: Kwaku Alston; Fallon Franklin. Arrangers: DJ Spinna; Emmai Alaquiva. After early singles "Braggin' Writes" and "Longevity" earned J-Live a spot in the Source's Unsigned Hype column and inclusion on DJ Premier's NY REALITY CHECK 101 compilation, the then-SUNY student was heralded among underground heads as the next big thing. Recorded between 1995 and '99 while he earned his degree, worked as a public school teacher in Brooklyn, and collaborated with big-name producers like Prince Paul, Pete Rock, and Premier, J-Live's debut LP was shelved due to label complications until 2001. An entertaining and heartfelt effort from start to finish, THE BEST PART proves the charismatic lyricist a master of the concept joint, as he flips an extended metaphor on "Vampire Hunter J," comes abstract with head-scratching contradictions on "Yes!," and spins a circular commentary on the trappings of the rap industry on "Them That's Not." The Best Part is, simply put, classic New York hip-hop, or, as J-Live himself labels it, "true school" that can trace its roots in a direct line back to such icons as KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane. Granted, J-Live didn't reach that level of name recognition with this debut album, and even if it doesn't quite attain the heights of the landmark recordings from those artists, it does threaten to scale them. It is a truly cataclysmic tour de force, especially when you consider the hoops through which the music was forced to jump before it finally appeared, long overdue, in 2001. The Best Part was near completion as early as 1997, and was once set for official release in 1999 (most of the songs were written between 1995 and 1998). Unfortunately, the album, according to J-Live's own liner notes, was "built, robbed, destroyed, rebuilt, held up, postponed, cancelled, shelved, bootlegged, analyzed, exploited, slept on, supported, patiently awaited, and appreciated" long before it ultimately came to commercial fruition for everyone else to appreciate. No wonder, then, that it is such a confident, assured record. No wonder also that the music is very reminiscent of the sounds that were coming out of the alternative New York scene of the fertile early '90s (Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul all lent a hand in the production booth), although, reworked as it frequently was, it sounded just as timely at the outset of the 21st century. So uniformly excellent are the songs that it plays almost like a best-of compilation, but particular highlights include the brilliant call-and-response anthem "YES!," the cool-cat jazz of "Them That's Not," a cerebral stream-of-consciousness head trip, the classic old-school pastiche "Kick It to the Beat" (featuring labelmates Asheru & Blue Black, with whom J-Live shares an artistic sensibility), the new wave groove of "Get the Third," and the autobiographical title track. This is one of the sine qua non hip-hop joints of the year. ~ Stanton Swihart

I'm Speechless This is what true hip hop is all about. Whenever you listen to this cd, it has replay value. J-Live talks about real life, not jewels, chicks, and cars. We need more true artists like this and avoid the frauds. Submitted by Plummah (Montclair, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This CD is a CLASSIC! I could listen to this CD for a while! This is how Hip Hop Should sound like for real. All the songs are hot in there own right. "Don't Play" is HOOOT, J-Live raps:"Spittin around tight wisdom making you think, If you around light sweetheart you can reflect' Don't put it down cause you need art you can respect". And "YES!" WOW J-Live raps:"Don't you see, my mentality is sort of like the boomerang effect, Over your head, but hit you in the back of your neck, F***ing with Live, who wins? What the **** you expect? That's like your girl tossing your S***d to get your respect". And then comes "Them thats not" weeeeeellll lets just say that song shows the skill he has on the mic. I am telling you all the songs on side A are Classic!. On side B the first song the "Get the third", This is another song thats hot! J-Live raps in the Chorus: "
Imma tell ya like this, you can get the third, eye or the leg or the finger if preferred, I know what's on ya mind so sis ya need to say the word
Eye or the Leg or the Bird...". In the title track "The best part" DJ Premier is on the beat...need I say more...J-Live raps:"Ten years, ten crates and ten rhyme books later
My history, daily renewed on it's equator, Supreme mathematics is now the translator, As the stakes and the skills and the love became greater...". And the last song "Epilogue", is a GREAT way to end this CD. I could do this all day but I want my Review to say on the site (knowing CDU they dont like long reviews) so just GET THIS CD TOOODDDDAAAYYYYYYYYY, and support true HIP HOPPPPPPP!!!!!

As a farewell to a century of musical innovation, Sonic Youth devote a double album to covering legendary avant-garde recordings such as John Cage's "Six," James Tenney's "Having Never Written a Note for Percussion," and Christian Wolff's "Edges." As a further token of gratitude, Sonic Youth had other avant-garde musicians such as William Winant collaborate with them on these covers. The result is a minimal album of silence occasionally interrupted by strange dissonance that quietly reaps noisy havoc on your mind. The many collaborators make Goodbye 20th Century a curious listen -- certainly ...
