In the liner notes that John Anello, Jr. wrote for Smile, the jazz guitarist/producer and Cexton Records president states that this CD makes one feel "like you're sitting in the middle of a jazz club." Anello speaks the truth; although Smile -- which he produced in a Hollywood, CA, studio in 1990 and released on Cexton in 1996 -- wasn't actually recorded in a jazz club, it feels live. That's because this acoustic hard bop CD was recorded live in the studio and is defined by spontaneity; on Smile, veteran tenor saxman Jay Migliori and colleagues Chiz Harris (drums), Joe Lettieri (piano), and Isla Eckinger (bass) form a quartet and play like they would have played on-stage in a jazz club. There are no fancy overdubs -- what one hears on Smile really went down in that Hollywood studio in 1990. The only type of safety net that the quartet had was the opportunity to play multiple takes; Anello picked the takes he felt were the most successful, and his ears served him well. Migliori, who was 60 when this album was recorded, is in prime form on the sexy, alluring "Bad Girl" (which acknowledges John Coltrane's more mellow side) and the angular "Lunatic Waltz," as well as spirited, hard-swinging performances of standards that include "The Song Is You," Gene Ammons' "Red Top," and Charlie Chaplain's "Smile." There are many noteworthy bop efforts in the Cexton catalog; Smile is one of the finest, most rewarding CDs that Anello's label has released. ~ Alex Henderson

I love his music and he was married to my sister Theresa Dandrea in the 1970's leaving behind two children JJ and Fable- Who I have lost touch with and would like to hear from Aunt Candy.

Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is ...

Bebel Gilberto All In One CD  (2009)

CD $12.05  Top 500 Audio Samples
With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits (his kit bag must weigh a ton), and his string of percussion instruments brings a rich texture to every song he graces. (He also co-wrote the best new songs, "Nossa Senhora" and "Ela [On My Way].") Also appearing ...

Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"--it all bespeaks an uncommon coolness ...

George Benson Greatest Hits Of All CD  (2003) Remastered

Smile CD music
CD $10.55  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Recorded between 1976 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Don Heckman. Basically, this "greatest hits of all" is simply that: the highest-charting tracks in George Benson's long career -- highest-charting pop and adult contemporary tracks, that is. Benson had been on the scene over a decade before signing with Warner Bros., and many of his jukebox and R&B hits were recorded for Creed Taylor's CTI label. Some of Benson's recorded work that held those hits has been reissued in the past two years. Of the Warner material, they have gauged success by chart placement -- not sales, not radio play, not artist choice. Therefore, while the stellar tracks from Breezin', namely "This Masquerade," which charted at number one on pop and R&B in Billboard, and its follow-up, the album's title track, kick the album off along with "On Broadway" and "The Greatest Love of All." But there are many stops along the way to the present from that 1976 issue, such as Benson's singularly beautiful read of "Unchained Melody," The vocal superstar & jazz guitar legend's most popular hits showcased on a TV marketed single-disc compilation of timeless music! 19 remastered tracks, more than 75 minutes of magic. Claus Ogerman, Quincy Jones, Mike Mainieri (arranger); Gary Herbig (saxophone, flute); Jerry Hey, Chuck Findley ...

The Hit Makers!/Time to Dream contains two albums from 1953 and 1956, respectively. The Hit Makers! is an early greatest-hits collection that includes the number one hit "How High the Moon," which has been cited by some critics as a contender for the title of first rock & roll recording. The Hit Makers! also has "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise," the distinctive sound of which was lampooned by Stan Freberg in a hit comedy recording. Time to Dream tones down the tape manipulation ...

I like to call this music "Kitchen Table Praise"! It is music captured in the moment while praising the Lord. It's not one type of music but like a vegetable soup for the soul it is many different styles chosen song by song . I love the sounds of natural stringed instruments, african drums and flutes. With the help of many talented musicians, they have taken what was written around my kitchen table to something more than I could have imagined. Life is about learning and growing. These songs are about everyday life and learning how awesome it is to have a relationship with the Lord. They hold my struggles and my praise while I've learned how to dance in adversity. I am grateful for this moment to share with you the gifts the Lord handed me to help me in my journey toward a deeper relationship with Him. As an Emergency Room Nurse, I see ...

Icarus Witch Songs For The Lost CD  (2007) Import

Smile songs
CD $18.59
Even for a period in time when vintage/classic heavy metal is enjoying an evident worldwide renaissance, Pittsburgh's Icarus Witch delivered an emphatic vow of loyalty to "'the faith" with their retro-tastic first album, Capture the Magic; and there's thankfully no sign that they want to come back to the future anywhere on album number two, 2007's Songs for the Lost. Heck, even though it's positively drenched in Iron Maiden-isms (galloping bass, twin guitar lines, and singer Matthew Bizilia's obvious debt to Bruce Dickinson), "Out for Blood" is a dynamite opener that gives immediate notice of the group's successful escape from the feared sophomore slump -- a fact later confirmed by additional strong efforts like "Nature of the Beast," "Queen of Lies," and the improbable metal-prog-AOR hybrid "Afterlife." Well-placed synthesizers add welcome depth and texture to the rousing, classy "The Sky Is Falling" (one of several, slow-paced, but surprisingly effective numbers benefiting from stellar solos by new guitarist Quinn Lukas), and the string-laden conclusion of "Smoke and Mirrors" simply has to be one of the best trad metal ballads yet to emerge from the new millennium. Admittedly, as with Icarus Witch's debut, certain songs still come off a little too underproduced ("House of Usher" doesn't quite measure ...
