Best Of Chron Gen album
$11.19 Lost in legal limbo since 1995 when it was originally recorded for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label, former Skinny Puppy frontman Nivek Ogre, in conjunction with producer/programmer Mark Walk, mix techno with modern rock, resulting in the group ohGr and this CD, Welt. A voice sounding like Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks in some mad amalgam of Kraftwerk and Black Sabbath, Welt is abrasive, gruff, melodic, and dark. Opening with the trancey, dancey "Water," the industrial leanings of this duo are evident from the outset. On first listen the album blurs from one tune to the next, but after repeated spins, each song's identity becomes clearer. It is the nature of electronic music to confuse the senses -- Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, released on CD by Buddah, is perhaps the best example of that, and though Welt is certainly ...

| | Razed In Black Damaged CDs (2003)
Best Of Chron Gen music CDs
$13.85 Although the band is beloved of goth kids and darkwave aficionados, Razed in Black has always been more complex than that; the group has been featured on electro-clash, neo-goth and disco/techno compilations, and its new album includes stylistic shout-outs to everyone from Depeche Mode (on the lovely "Come Back to Me") to, well, Metallica (the very crunchy "Am I 2 Blame?"). ...

| | Pickin' On Tom Petty: Heartbreaker -- A Bluegrass Tribute CD (2006)
Best Of Chron Gen music CDs
$14.29 A lot of the Pickin' On entries are closer to being running jokes than they are actual albums, often proving no more than the fact that almost any melody can be given a bluegrass cadence and veneer. This one, which takes on the songs of rocker Tom Petty, doesn't break from the template a whole lot, but it does reveal how melodic Petty can be underneath all those electric ...
| | Jim Hall Youkali CD (1992)
Best Of Chron Gen songs
$17.69 Guitarist Jim Hall gets the late-period Creed Taylor CTI treatment on the generally rewarding Youkali set. Extensive overdubbing was used so Chet Baker (who died in 1988) magically appears on three of the six selections. Also teamed with Hall on some numbers are Grover Washington, Jr. (on soprano and tenor), Donald Harrison on soprano, the wordless vocals of Carmen Cuesta (on "Youkali"), a brass section, and various other instruments arranged by Jim Pugh and Don Sebesky. Through it all, Hall plays quite tastefully as usual. The six songs ("Youkali" is a lesser-known Kurt Weill tune and Hall composed the moody "All Across the City") are superior, the arrangements work well, and the guitarist makes all of this work quite worthwhile. ~ Scott Yanow
