| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Silver Gleaming Death Machine
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Silver Gleaming Death Machine
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Silver Gleaming Death Machine
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the ...
| | Kiss Sonic Boom CDs (2009)
Silver Gleaming Death Machine
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike ...

Silver Gleaming Death Machine
$17.15 Even given that Tom Rapp is one of the more celebrated cult rock figures owing to his recordings both on his own and as the figurehead of Pearls Before Swine, it still comes as something of a surprise to find a full double-CD tribute album of Rapp covers. It's not that much of a surprise that most of the artists on the compilation are far more obscure than even Rapp, with a few exceptions like Thurston Moore and Mike Watt (who recorded "Fourth Day of July" together), Alastair Galbraith, and Bardo Pond. Some of Rapp's better-known songs are interpreted, such as "These Things Too," "Rocket Man," "Uncle John," and "Sail Away," though as is almost inevitable on a record with covers of 27 different Rapp tunes, some of them may be obscure even to fans of the songwriter. The mood is largely in keeping with Rapp's original vision -- gentle, eccentric acid folk with streaks of mysticism, aggression, and poetic whimsy, though in keeping with most tribute projects, they ...
