| | Deerhoof Reveille CD Deerhoof Discography of CDs
Deerhoof includes: Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich, Greg Saunier. San Francisco's strident Deerhoof is a much-loved deconstructionist art-pop outfit. The band is part no wave skronk, part Yoko Ono meets the B-52's, and part weirdo J-pop, and continues to push the musical envelope on each new recording. Reveille is a pretty good example of what Deerhoof is capable of. Quite a few of its songs are instrumental, for the most part, helter-skelterish flare-ups with primitive Casio-like bloops and bleeps, angular fizz-pop guitars, and epileptic drum freakouts. Those few songs that feature Satomi Matsuzaki's purring falsetto -- her very presence elevates this band above most avant pop groups -- have a simplicity and sugar-soaked sweetness, enticing listeners with charm before boxing their ears with an all-out aural assault. Reveille begins with an unassuming spoken word opening before launching into a variety of sounds. "All Rise" has a baseball stadium-cum-church organ feel, and "Days & Nights in the Forest" starts off with progressive jazz elements before introducing other elements. Though Deerhoof reportedly has to be seen performing live -- when the bandmembers are able to temper and balance the explosive quiet-loud of their tunes -- to be fully appreciated and to get the full effect, this album is as good a place to start your journey as any of the group's recordings. ~ Bryan ThomasThe Wire (8/02, p.51) - "...REVEILLE is their most composed record....They mix noise aesthetics and a Beach Boys/California pop sensibility....It makes for a wondrous ride.." Reveille
$7.69 No Returns!-Buy Accordingly!
Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Lee Renaldo (guitar); Kim Gordon (bass); Steve Shelley (drums). Sonic Youth invested the money they earned as Lollapalooza headliners in 1995 in a new studio. Owning their own studio gave them the freedom to experiment as they were recording, since they no longer had to pay rental fees. To inaugurate their new studio, they set out to record a series of experimental instrumental EPs with engineer Wharton Tiers, all of which would be released on the quartet's own ...
| | Deerhoof Apple O' CD (2003)
Reveille
$12.15 Deerhoof: Satomi Matsuzaki (vocals, bass); Greg Saunier (vocals, drums); Chris Cohen, John Dieterich (guitar). Personnel: Greg Saunier (vocals, drums); Satomi Matsuzaki (vocals); Chris Cohen, John Dieterich (guitar). Crashing in at just over half an hour long, Apple O' brims over with as many vivid bursts of musical and lyrical inspiration as Deerhoof's other albums, but offers a little more conceptual structure for the band's outbursts and childlike melodies. As the title implies, ...
| | Deerhoof Milk Man CD (2004)
Reveille
$11.79 Deerhoof: Greg Saunier, John Dieterich, Satomi Matsuzaki, Chris Cohen. While no one would ever Deerhoof accuse of conventionality, the San Francisco quartet presented their closest stab with 2004's MILK MAN, their sixth full-length. Based on a cartoon character dreamed up by the artist Ken Kagimi, the song cycle tells its story in song and finds the band pruning their aural paroxysms with a cleaner, more steamlined sound. Chris Cohen and John Dieterich offer splashes of electric angularity and off-balance riff eruptions with reference points across the art guitar gamut from ...
| | Deerhoof Runners Four CD (2005)
Reveille
$13.45 After seven albums' worth of gleeful pandemonium, Deerhoof calm things down a bit with The Runners Four, a collection of songs that are even more restrained than Milk Man and the Green Cosmos EP. Perhaps trying for the unpredictability of their earlier work got too, well, predictable for the band. Even though the manic intensity that characterized work like Reveille is missed a little here, The Runners Four is still a far cry from typical indie rock; in fact, it sounds more like one of Deerhoof's older albums played at half-speed than anything else. Most importantly, the joyful creativity that radiates from all of the band's other work ...
| | Thom Yorke Eraser CD (2006)
Reveille
$9.89 Personnel: Thom Yorke; Jonny Greenwood (piano); Nigel Godrich. Audio Mixer: Nigel Godrich. Arrangers: Thom Yorke; Nigel Godrich. In 2006, with little advance word, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke unveiled his first solo album, THE ERASER, much to the surprise of many of the band's fans. Given that Yorke is the literal voice of the beloved British rock ensemble, these nine songs, produced by Nigel Godrich, don't depart too much from Radiohead's moody, electronica-tinged sound (i.e. KID A, AMNESIAC, HAIL TO THE THIEF), but they do prove to be more intimate, sometimes recalling the hauntingly spare ...
| | Nick Cave Your Funeral... My Trial CDs (1986) (Import) Bonus DVD; Collector's Edition; Remastered; United Kingdom
Reveille
$16.19 Reduced to a quartet for the most part, with Barry Adamson joining Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld, Mick Harvey and Thomas Wydler on only a couple of tracks, the Bad Seeds turn from the interpretive triumph of Kicking Against the Pricks to another strong high, the mostly-original Your Funeral...My Trial. The one cover is a sharp, unsurprisingly dramatic version of Tim Rose's "Long Time Man." As for the rest of the album, Trial shows the Seeds working as, again, a remarkably accomplished and varied act, ever available and ready to explore a wide range of musics distilled into Cave's often dark, always passionate vision. Arguably Cave and company have by now so clearly established ...
