Stamitz: Chamber Works
$15.99 GLADIATOR was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
The combination of the prolific Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is an ingenious one. He's set lush musical backgrounds to everything from comedies (I'LL DO ANYTHING), to period pieces (DRIVING MISS DAISY), to blockbuster war flicks (THE THIN RED LINE); she's one of the duo comprising Dead Can Dance, perhaps the most singular popularizers of ancient music of the '80s and '90s.
Zimmer and Gerrard contribute a thrilling, boisterous score. These stirring, magnificent pieces are vital to such epics as GLADIATOR, which depend on them to rouse audiences into fits of passion, to suck them into the action, to involve them in every bloody battle, to bask in the hero's triumphs, to gasp at his possible defeat. The music in GLADIATOR expertly evokes an ancient time with a mixture of majestic, classical themes, and folk music of the ages. Fans of the movie will revel in reliving the grandeur of this powerful cinematic production.

| | Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos CD (1996)
Stamitz: Chamber Works
$8.39 APOCALYPTICA PLAYS METALLICA BY FOUR CELLOS features instrumental cello arrangements of Metallica songs.
The premise of a cello-playing four piece (from Finland, no less) performing the music of Metallica may seem outrageous at first, but much of the metal gods' repertoire translates surprisingly well into this "classical" reading. And while Apocalyptica chooses to concentrate on more recent hits like "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam" for obvious commercial purposes, it is Metallica's earlier, more complex compositions, like "Master of Puppets," "Creeping Death," and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," which actually work best in this scenario. The quartet's love and understanding of the music is the real key here, and their attention to detail and technically flawless performance will no doubt satisfy even the most skeptical of fans. And while it is unlikely that this album will interest non-Metallica fans, it obviously inspired the band themselves to explore the classical direction on their own terms with 1999's S&M album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Four long haired classical music students who donothin' but rockin' Metallica covers with their 18th centurycellos. Metallica's Lars Ulrich is a big fan of the ...

Stamitz: Chamber Works
$15.15 It's impossible to summarize the remarkable career of Placido Domingo in the span of a single disc, but BRAVO! DOMINGO is an admirable showcase of the attributes that have assured the singer a place among the greatest tenors of all time. First and foremost, there is the voice--an extraordinarily rich instrument that he wields with power, grace, and unerring musicianship. Domingo is also renowned for his versatility. He has always explored diverse areas of operatic literature and challenged himself artistically through a wide variety of roles. The disc includes several arias from operas by Puccini and Verdi that have been central to his musical life and ably demonstrate his artistry.
Domingo has also devoted considerable time and energy to performing and recording traditional and popular music from Spain, Mexico, Cuba, and Latin America. His commitment to musical forms and cultures outside of the standard repertoire is evident in outstanding performances of works such as "Quiereme Mucho," "Paloma Querida," "Un Minuto de Amor," and "Granada."
