Kiss My Ass CD (1994)
If the Twenty-First Century Didn't Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It songs During their heyday, there wasn't a more popular band in the world than Kiss. With their unique brand of kabuki metal, and their elaborate stage show, Kiss defined spectacle in rock and roll. But as the impertinently titled KISS MY A** demonstrates, the lyric dimension of their songwriting--and the band's pedigree in classic rock craft--has too long been overlooked.
As this extraordinarily varied retrospective/testimonial makes clear, their music lends itself to a wide range of interpretations and stylistic takes. Most surprising are an Aaron Coplandesque reading of "Black Diamond" by Yoshiki & The American Symphony Orchestra, and a spirited down home acoustic rendition of "Hard Luck Woman" by...yes, Garth Brooks, who makes Kiss sound like a cross between Springsteen and Mellencamp.
One curious aspect of KISS MY A** is the surfeit of Boston area alterna-nation bands represented, including Dinosaur Jr., Extreme, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and the Lemonheads (who treat "Plaster Caster" as something of a Sex Pistols romp). Then, Anthrax weighs in with a suitably barbaric "She," while the Gin Blossoms mine the classic vein of '70s glitz and glam to enliven "Christine Sixteen."

Jukebox Giants: WOGL Philadelphia, Vol. 1 CD (1996)
If the Twenty-First Century Didn't Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It songs Several installments in Collectables' Jukebox Giants series have the appearance of catering toward play lists of specific oldies stations across the States. Boston's WODS and New York City's WCBS each have three volumes in the series, and then another three "general" volumes aren't tied to any particular station. They are no different than the three volumes dedicated to Philadelphia's WOGL. In other words, the first WODS volume, the first WCBS volume, the first general volume, and this disc are exactly the same, offering the same 14 songs. The first volume features Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs' "Stay," Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin," the Dell Vikings' "Come Go With Me," Jerry Butler and Betty Everett's "Let It Be Me," the Turtles' "Happy Together," and Frankie Avalon's "Venus." ~ Andy Kellman

Psychedelic Sixties French EP Collection CDs
If the Twenty-First Century Didn't Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It album for sale Full title - Psychedelic Sixties Music French EP Collection. French collection includes the original versions of 14 collectable EP's remastered in high definition 24-bit. Artists include Thirteenth Floor Elevators, The Seeds, The Five Americans, The Electric Prunes, We The People, & more. Paper sleeves housed in a clamshell box. Magic Records. 2003.
And here we go, with 13 E.P.s by ten smoking, '60s psychedelic heroes, issued in France in glorious 24-bit sound, with individual picture sleeves for each one. This is one cool artifact. Here, the Thirteenth Floor Elevators kick it off with a slippery looking sleeve and are represented by four smoking tracks: "You're Gonna Miss Me," "Reverberation," "Fire Engine," and "Tried To Hide." They are followed by the Seeds, the Five Americans, the Electric Prunes, the Shadows of Knight, and We The People, with two EPs each; Music Explosion, Count Five, Shakespeares, and Syn. Those with one disc have two singles paired on a disc, while the others have recordings issued that way in Europe. This is one of those nifty, price-friendly sets that collectors die for, and it happens to have a boatload of great music that one might already have, but not in this way. This is a fetish project worth its price. ~ Thom Jurek

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Live from Alabama CD (2012)
If the Twenty-First Century Didn't Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It album for sale Not long after Jason Isbell released his first solo album, 2007's Sirens of the Ditch, he released an EP, Live at Twist and Shout, which documented an in-store performance by Isbell and his band the 400 Unit at a Denver, Colorado record shop. Just four years later, Isbell has delivered another live disc, Live from Alabama, a full-length album culled from a pair of August 2012 concerts, and if one wonders why Isbell seems so keen to record his live sets, one listen will tell you why: Isbell and his band are at their best in front of an audience, and Live from Alabama demonstrates Isbell's impressive gifts as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and frontman. While his work with the Drive-By Truckers was impressive, he's grown tremendously as a singer since striking out on his own, and with a crowd to cheer him on, Isbell delivers the goods on Live from Alabama, sounding richly soulful on "Heart on a String," rueful and evocative on "In a Razor Town," and full of bluesy swagger on "The Blue." If the 400 Unit lack the volume and firepower of the DBTs, the smaller, more dynamic combo leaves more room for dynamics and subtlety, which works well for Isbell's songs (the versions of "Decoration Day" and "Danko/Manuel" here rival those he recorded with the Truckers), and like his vocals, Isbell's guitar work is all the more impressive when it doesn't have to fight for space. As a storyteller, Isbell's tales of dashed hopes and Southern pride are powerful, realistic, and keenly intelligent, and he and the band bring them to life with just the right touch. And the closing cover of Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" is a barn-burning finale. If you haven't seen Isbell and the 400 Unit on-stage, Live from Alabama will likely convince you to show up the next time they play in your area, and if you already have, this will remind you why you walked home impressed. ~ Mark Deming

Big Bill Broonzy / Brownie Mcghee / Sonny Terry / Josh White Great Bluesmen In Britain CD
If the Twenty-First Century Didn't Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It CD music This is an odd and charming collection of private recordings by Big Bill Broonzy, and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, probably done at small parties in hotel rooms, or in the case of Josh White, at a radio station. Entirely acoustic, the sets by Broonzy and Terry and McGhee have a kind of muted, casual feel that is impossible to resist. The radio set by White, which includes a short interview, feels more like a performance, but still features a hushed intimacy. While the material here probably shouldn't be considered a good introduction to any of these artists, its charm is undeniable, and no one will suffer for adding this to their collection. ~ Steve Leggett
Contains 32 tracks.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Full performer name: Big Bill Broonzy/Sonny Terry/ Brownie McGhee/Josh White.
