| | As I Lay Dying Frail Words Collapse CD (2003)
Persist And Destroy music CDs
$10.19 As I Lay Dying is one of many, many bands to throw their hat into the Swedish-influenced metal-hardcore ring in the early 2000s, joining fellow metal-label signees as God Forbid and Shadows Fall (Century Media) and Killswitch Engage (Roadrunner). Frail Words Collapse is a solid example of its genre, carrying the stereotypical hallmarks of harmonized dual-guitar riffing (often reminiscent of In Flames or Iron Maiden), heavy double-bass drumming, and roaring vocals that occasionally slip into a melodic, clean-voiced emo style. There are also a few more dissonant, "technical" passages that nod toward Converge and their ilk. The songs here are solid enough and well executed, and the production is adequate (if a little too clean and digital sounding). This album will appeal mostly to devoted fans of the genre who are looking for another slight variation on the In Flames-influenced metal-hardcore style. ~ William York

| | Little Brother Listening CD (2003)
Persist And Destroy music CDs
$15.05 In Little Brother's music, the North Carolina group makes a specific point to highlight the more refined aspects of mid-'90s hip-hop. Basing its 2002 sound upon the foundation previously established by the likes of Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Dee, and Black Star, Little Brother makes somewhat of a political statement by applying such standards to this modern age. The Listening does an exceptional job of proving that soulful meditations have indeed retained their traditional relevancy within the contemporary realms of rap. 9th Wonder's production leads the charge with distinct drum kicks pacing larger-than-life melodic samples, which are often enhanced with sultry female voice-overs. Meanwhile, Phonte and Big Pooh dig even deeper within the hip-hop vaults as they draw upon classic routines by the likes of Rakim, Slick Rick, and Audio 2 for their lyrical inspiration. Whether engaged in storytelling, braggadocio, or simple reassurance, the rhyming duo complements 9th Wonder's varying shades of mood music with a consistent degree of skill and sincerity. The album ...
| | Caliban Split Program, Vol. 2 CD (2005)
Persist And Destroy songs
$11.39 This split album begins with a six-pack of tunes from Heaven Shall Burn, who waste no time after an industrial opening to break out into the heavy and hard "Unleash Enlightment." Lead singer Marcus Bischoff blends his singing with a guttural wail at times, while the twin guitars pump out solid metal riffs. Think of groups like At the Gates and Earth Crisis and you will get the picture here. They are also capable of thick and beefy nu metal arrangements. Loud and punishing throughout, Heaven Shall Burn tear into "No One Will Shed a Tear," which has a strong but pedestrian-like groove running through it. The odd song is the tender, Faith No More-ish orchestral instrumental "Nyfædd Von," which has more in common with Sigur Rós than Metallica. It's an aberration, however, once the hellish "If This Is a Man" rears its primal hardcore metal head. The highlight of the group's offering is the simple but shining performance of "Downfall of Christ," with a great chorus and drummer Matthias Voigt working triple time. Caliban's sound is more intense and, if possible, ...
