| | Casey Kasem Presents America's Top Ten: The 60'S The Folk Years CD
This volume of Casey Kasem's America's Top Ten series focuses on the folk-tinged pop of the 1960s, drawing heavily from the perennial classics, but including a few "deep cuts" as well. There's defining material like the Byrds' timeless "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Get Together," from the Youngbloods, the youthful yearn of the Grass Roots' "Let's Live for Today," and Barry McGuire's angry, helpless "Eve of Destruction." Donovan's dippy "Mellow Yellow" and the name-checking fun of Peter, Paul and Mary's "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" skew a bit lighter, while Judy Collins ("Both Sides Now") gets melodramatic, and the Lemon Pipers ("Green Tambourine") chew on psychedelic bubblegum. This is all standard fare for oldies radio (and can Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" really be called folk? It seems like a concession to sales here), but tracks from Spanky and Our Gang, We Five, and the Rooftop Singers offer a slightly lesser-known -- yet no less enjoyable -- layer to the set. '60s aficionados will have everything here already. But America's Top Ten is perfect for the casual listener. ~ Johnny Loftus

$11.99 Some songs on this album appear in different form in the film HIGHLANDER.
A KIND OF MAGIC primarily functioned as a musical backdrop for the movie HIGHLANDER, but unlike Queen's other motion picture soundtrack (1980's FLASH GORDON), the album doesn't contain a single instrumental--they're all fully realized songs. Although it's not quite on par with their time-honored offerings from the '70s and didn't chart well in the States, A KIND OF MAGIC still contains more than a few classic Queen tracks.
For those who doubted Queen could still compose rip-roaring heavy metal, the lead-off track, "One Vision," silenced such concerns ...

Casey Kasem Presents America's Top Ten: The 60'S The Folk Years
$12.05 The Deathray Davies have always been an interesting band combining a downcast and often insular lyrical approach with a sometimes sunny, sometimes lo-fi and ugly sound, much like a less cheery Pavement or a tune-free Guided by Voices. Interesting, but missing something important. Their fifth album feels like the sun breaking through the clouds as the band tosses aside any indie pretension and steps unblinking into the big leagues. The Kick and the Snare is a glittering, slick, and tough-as-nails rock record with hooky tunes, rich arrangements (full ...
