| | Golden Oldies Vol. 7: Greatest Rock N' Roll Hits 50'S & 60'S CD
Original Sounds' Golden Oldies series presents great hits from the '60s and '70s as performed by the original artists. Though the discs are extremely brief at only ten songs and are randomly sequenced, they are exciting reminders of just how good music could be during that "golden" era. Vol. 7 is culled from the '60s and takes a somewhat harder rocking approach than many of the other sets in the series, with the inclusion of tracks from the Music Machine ("Talk Talk"), the Standells ("Dirty Water"), and Shocking Blue ("Venus"). ~ Tim Sendra
Original Sound's Golden Oldies series boasts digital remastering, a claim often made by labels attempting to pass off shoddy sound with a few hi-fi buzzwords. Surprisingly, these tracks do sound better than in past recreations, though Original Sound could've done music fans an additional favor by stretching out the CD's to more than a bare half-hour running time. The seventh volume has a heavy tilt toward R&B, including genre classics like "Sixty Minute Man" by Billy Ward & His Dominoes, "Don't You Just Know It" by Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns, Little Willie John's aching version of "Fever," and Bill Doggett's instrumental hit "Honky Tonk." ~ John Bush
Performers include: Bill Doggett, Peppermint Harris, The El Dorados, Bobby Blue Band.
Personnel: Jimmy Reed Jr., Peppermint Harris (vocals, guitar); Clyde McPhatter, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Marchan (vocals). | | Rossington Collins Band 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Rossington-Collins Band CD (2003)
Golden Oldies Vol. 7: Greatest Rock N' Roll Hits 50'S & 60'S music CDs
$7.79 When the plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd went down, it was the day the music died for many Southern rock fans. Ronnie VanZant, the guiding light of Skynyrd, was gone, as was guitarist Steve Gaines -- both taken at the peak of the band's popularity. And while a Skynyrd demo collection was rushed out in 1978, the Rossington Collins Band essentially provided the final chapter in the original Lynyrd Skynyrd story. Along with new singer Dale Krantz, four of the surviving members -- guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins along with keyboard player Billy Powell and bassist Leon Wilkeson -- regrouped and recorded two albums, 1980's Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere and This Is the Way, released in 1982. The ongoing MCA series 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection collects the best tracks from those two albums plus a few tracks from itinerant projects from Rossington and Collins later in the decade. Their most popular tracks are here, "Prime Time" and ...
| | Yellowcard One For The Kids CD (2001) Bonus Track; Enhanced CD
Golden Oldies Vol. 7: Greatest Rock N' Roll Hits 50'S & 60'S songs
$10.09 Yellowcard's One for the Kids is a power punk album full of hooks and catchy choruses as strong as any of the syrupy sweet punk bands around southern California, except that Yellowcard is from Florida. Nevertheless, Yellowcard's take on punk is a bit different (but isn't that what punk is all about anyway?), as one of the major instruments incorporated on the album is the electric violin. It truly adds a whole new dynamic to the album, as it seems more like the Dave Matthews Band at some points rather than Lagwagon or New Found Glory. The guitar playing is furious and full of stops and starts, very reminiscent of early Slick Shoes material. And if all this weren't enough, there are a couple of acoustic ...
