| Prepare For A Swashbuckling Adventure! Avast, ye mateys! Running Wild is the pioneer band of "pirate metal", and although I'm no big fan of power metal, this bizarre brand of it makes me want to grab my eyepatch, machete and parrot to go plunder some local record stores! You get so close to the concept of "pirate metal" on some of these songs, that you can almost smell the salty sea air and feel the boards creaking as the wooden ship sways in the vast ocean. Granted, not all of this CD is like the descriptions I include in this interview. There are some songs on here that aren't even related to pirates at all, and how fun is that? Most of the lyrics on this album are pretty creative, and they offer a wide variety of differing topics. The biggest "pirate metal" song of this album is, of course, the 11 minute epic "Treasure Island". The first minute and a half of the song is a narraration, but the rest is quite interesting and groovy. Something you might ask next is, what does "pirate metal" sound like? Well, pirates are all about power, so its pretty much power metal about pirate stuff. The riffs are catchy and full of hooks and the rhythm is steady and constantly marching on. These tunes are so great, I'm surprised this band isnt bigger than they are. They've been doing this pirate scheme ever since the late 80s. In my opinion, they need to come pillage, waste and burn some of these crappy modern day rock bands we have here in the USA. No matter how cheesey, Running Wild's music can still make these present day pansies walk the plank. Most concepts for bands and albums have been done to death by now, but I'll tell you this: I've never heard of any band attempt to pull off what Running Wild has. I've always been into legends of lore and that stuff, and Running Wild paints some vivid and amazing pictures with their unstoppable imaginations. If you don't go out and buy this album right now, my scurvy lads and I will come board your ship, steal your women and plunder your gold! By Taylor (www.guitar6.com) |
