| | Faith & The Muse Vera Causa CDs (2001)
Dreamspace songs
$15.99 Coming off a rough period of personal loss and creative strain after 1999's Evidence of Heaven, William Faith and Monica Richards return to the world that's made them one of the most cherished acts within the goth rock circuit. They're not exclusively goth rock, for their appreciation of neo-classical, folk, and worldbeat compositions also casts a fervor into their own experimental work. Vera Causa celebrates their expansive love for such music, highlighting covers, remixes, outtakes, and live tracks. Faith and the Muse give back to the fans. Disc one offers acoustic and demo cuts along with exquisite cover selections from some of Faith and the Muse's favorite artists. The Chameleons UK's "Soul of Isolation," performed by Faith, glows in slight darkwave ambience while his guitar work is intricately sharp, cusping his dark brood and a roaring chorus. Richards' vocalic beauty on Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" shutters into a clamoring mix of hard percussion and gnawing guitars. It's far more abrasive and wounded compared to Bush's theatrical take, but equally chilling. And the musical mayhem continues, particularly on the Christian Death cover, "Romeo's Distress." Faith and the Muse were extremely saddened by Rozz Williams' suicide in 1998, and their live rendition of Williams' cult classic is both ...

While many bands lumped under the nu-metal banner seem to rely on angry posturing and shock tactics to sell records, Staind has quietly and consistently topped the sales and radio charts with a stripped-down and emotionally direct approach devoid of gimmickry. On the group's third album 14 SHADES OF GREY, singer Aaron Lewis and crew deliver a distinctly organic-sounding, mature disc that still manages to rock like a wild beast.
Powered by the pile-driving yet earthy rhythm section of bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, Staind stands head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries by mixing de-tuned thrash with an old-school rock & roll kick. There's a touch of bluesy Led Zeppelin mixed in with the angst, and the band's subtle sexiness serves to temper Lewis's darker melodic and lyrical instincts. Featuring songs that address everything ...
| | Darkest Hour Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation CD (2003) Bonus CD; Enhanced CD
Dreamspace music CDs
$9.89 On Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, it should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band rolls through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger
To be indelicate, the vocal style that's taken grip throughout much punk/metal crossover music might be fairly characterized as the sound of a guy about to vomit into the microphone, amplified to 11 and aimed for maximum trajectory. Even within that narrow genre, the singing of John Henry on Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, crosses well beyond the bounds of (presumably unconscious) self-parody. The lyrics are printed (in teeny teeny script) in the sleeve, true, but even those who enjoy such sandpaper vocals and don't mind the difficulty in comprehension ...

| | Motorhead Bomber CDs (1979) Bonus CD; Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Dreamspace album
$18.69 One of a trifecta of classic Motorhead albums featuring the group's penultimate lineup of Lemmy (bass/vocals), Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums), and "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar), BOMBER (the other two being OVERKILL and ACE OF SPADES) is as loud, fast, raw, and heavy as music gets. The title track and the opener, "Dead Men Tell No Tales," remain two of the group's all-time definitive tracks, both showcasing Lemmy's patented hoarse growl and distorted bass riffing to spine-tingling and head-banging effect.
Recorded in late summer 1979 and released by the end of the year, Bomber quickly followed up Overkill, Motörhead's landmark breakthrough album from earlier in the year. Bomber bears a lot in common with its fan-favorite predecessor. For starters, it features the classic Motörhead lineup: Lemmy (bass and vocals), "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar), and "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums). Also like Overkill, Bomber features the production grace of Jimmy Miller, the man responsible for the Rolling Stones' late-'60s/early-'70s albums, including such masterpieces as Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. And the music here on Bomber explodes on song after song, thanks to the crazed performances of the aforementioned bandmembers as well as the well-overdriven, ear-rattling production perfection of Miller. Actually, there's only one marked difference between Overkill and Bomber that's worth noting: the songs. There are a couple killers here, namely "Dead Men Tell No Tales," "Stone Dead Forever," and "Bomber," but overall, the songs of Bomber aren't as strong as those of Overkill were. Granted, this is somewhat of a moot point to raise, as Bomber is still a top-shelf Motörhead album, one of their all-time best, without question. But it does fall just a notch or two below Overkill ...
