SHAMAN DRUMS is a best-of collection that showcases percussionist/keyboardist James Asher's most rapturous moments. From his acclaimed FEET IN THE SOIL album come "Send in the Drums" and "Red Rhythm Dragon," featuring Aboriginal drumming with didgeridoo drones. Complex Gambian percussion lights up "Tantango," from the same album. The bewitching "Temple Gates," from TIGERS OF THE RAJ, succeeds at fusing classical Indian drumming and bansuri flutes with a trancey modern sound. Most exciting here is the previously released "Amma," an exhilarating collage of techno-tribal beats, strenuous percussion by popular Indian drummer Sivamani, and radiant female vocals. If you've missed Asher's previous work, this is the place to start.
